Cream cotton doyley (doiley) crocheted by either Elsie Nolting (nee Fraser) or her cousin May Rose (nee Bennett) both of Charlton Victoria. The item was made around 1918 as a dedication to the success of the allies in the First World War. Doyley is crocheted in a treble stitch, edged with clear glass beads. The Pipe Bridge was constructed to bring fresh water from Fairfield to Kew. This bridge was destroyed in the 1934 Flood and later reconstructed.Early sepia real photo postcard of the first Pipe Bridge bringing water from the Yan Yean Reservoir to Kew. The Kew Historical Society's postcard collection includes views of Kew, Melbourne and Greater Melbourne as well as those including overseas scenes sent or received from Europe or the Middle East. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s. These postcards may or may not include the name of the publisher or printer. A number of the cards were published as parts of popular series. A way of dating early postcards is to identify whether the reverse was divided by a central line which became the norm after 1902 in the United Kingdom. However, other postcards produced after this date do not always conform to this print layout.The item forms part of the Laurie Bennett collection of thirty-six postcards and photographs of Kew and early Melbourne, donated to the Kew Historical Society in 1980. The postcards in the Bennett collection, like other images in the Society's holdings date from the 1890s to the present and comprehensively indicate points-of-view or scenes considered historically, aesthetically or socially significant in the period in which they were produced.Postcard depicting the Kew Post Office and Court House (built 1888) on the corner of High Street and Cotham Road. In front of the Post Office is a large Moreton Bay Fig tree. The later Kew War Memorial (opened 1925) necessitated the removal of the tree and the relaocation of the Queen Victoria Jubilee Fountain. This book is the second series of recipes collated by the Christ Church Ladies’ Guild, the first collection having been published the previous year, 1911. The preface is written by C J Bennett, President of the Ladies’ Guild. The Guild raised funds towards projects at the Church.It has local significance being produced by a local firm. It also contains the names of a large number of people who were part of the Christ Church Parish at the time.Fawn coloured cover with black lettering. The slaughter house is among the trees in the background. Note where the 'Law' is at the post office. I would like to see this enlarged. I think this photo is special because it shows the turntable where the trains used to turn before the rail went thru to Skipton which I remember all the [illegible] being made so many people working in Linton. As kids we loved to watch as the train came out facing a different way. The railway station master's house Mr Thompson was the SM. The old Grenville Standard office run by Mr Adams." Archibald Crofts (1875-1942) was born in India and came to Australia in the mid 1890's. He married Mary Keene i 1899 and in 1905 opened his first grocery store in Sth Melbourne. Eventually there were 137 Crofts stores including one in Bendigo. In many cases these were the first self-serve grocery stores. Crofts was also heavily involved in the South Melbourne Football Club and was its president 1933-37. He was a councillor for South Melbourne in 1931 before entering state politics in 1935 until his death.Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2002.
