Enlisted in the 2nd AIF 17/12/1940 Regt No. VX52843 in 2/29th Battalion at Darnley Camp, embarked for Singapore 13.9.1941, disembarked 5.10.1941, reported missing 16.2.1942 then classified POW. He was recovered in Sumatra after the surrender. He was hospitalised with Malnutrition then classed Debility. Disembarked Sydney 9.10.1945. Discharged from the 2nd AIF on 20/12/1945 with the rank of Lieutenant. He was awarded a Mention in Despatches and the Efficiency Medal.Soft cover book. This booklet written by Tim Gatehouse and published by the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne gives details on the Arts and Crafts movement background and history in Australia, a short biography of Walter Richmond Butler, architect of the Mission to Seafarers and architect to the diocese of Melbourne from 1895. In 1902 he designed the extensions to Bishopscourt, East Melbourne, now called the Butler Wing.Walter Richmond Butler was an influential British architect bringing his knowledge in the Arts and Crafts movement to Australia. He was commissioned the design of the first mission in central Melbourne, the Central Institute on Siddeley Street, then the second Mission on Flinders Street. This is the biography of Father John Brosnan (1919-2003) who was well-known as the Catholic Chaplain at Pentridge Prison in Melbourne for 30 years and the person who attended the hanging of Robert Ryan, the last man hanged in Victoria in 1967. Father Brosnan was born in Keilambete and spent his early years in Cudgee, attending Cudgee State School. This book is of interest because it tells the life story of Father John Brosnan who was born in the Western District and spent his early years at Cudgee, 15 kilometres from Warrnambool. Father Brosnan achieved fame as the Catholic Chaplain at Pentridge Prison and as the priest who campaigned to save Ronald Ryan from hanging and who was with Ryan when he was hanged. This is a soft cover book of 170 pages. The cover has an image of Father Brosnan in sepia tones set against a background of the front of Pentridge Prison in dark blue tonings. The modern day 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment is the custodian of the theatre Battle Honour "SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902" awarded to the 9th and 11th Light Horse Regiments. This Battle Honour was awarded to all extant Light Horse units in Australia under Military Order 123 of 1908, in recognition of all states' contribution to the forces who represented Australia against the Boers. Selina Sutherland was a 19th century nurse and social welfare reformer. She was particularly concerned with the welfare of destitute children. She founded the Sutherland Homes for Children which moved to Diamond Creek in around 1909. This biography was written by J. C. Jessop in 1958. James Robert Valentine Anderson (1881-1969) was born at Chewton. He married Minnie Lyle Morrison (1878-1973) in 1907. He was a mining engineer who became a teacher at the School of Mines. In 1907 he became the curator of the School of Mines Museum and in 1910 was appointed the Principal/Director of the School of Mines (now TAFE). He held this position until about 1945.Program for the official opening of the refurbished School of Mines Building renamed the JRV Anderson Building for the Bendigo College of TAFE in November 1986.
