Anne Hunniford's Post Office and Burgoyne's store on left. Miss Harriet (Minnie) Williams's Cash Drapery Mart (est. 1902 and enlarged in 1906), also known as Eltham House on the right. Harriet (Minnie) Williams was born London, 1857, the daughter of George John Williams (1812-1895) and Jane Mansfield (1812-1895). In September 1885 she was operating Williams’s Drapery Establishment in premises on Main Road owned by R. Wallis who advertised them to let in September 1885. In 1902 she opened Williams’s Cash Drapery Mart at the southwest corner of Bridge Street and Main Road (opposite the Post Office), owned by W.J. Taylor. In 1906 she bought the premises and one quarter acre of land and expanded the business with a re-opening in April 1906. Harriet was also well-known and esteemed as an active worker in Methodist circles and also Superintendent of the Sunday School. Harriet fell ill in August 1907 and died 15 August. She is buried in Eltham Cemetery with her good friend Ada Ford. For over three years Miss Williams has carried on a drapery business in very small and inconvenient premises opposite the Eltham post-office. Recently she bought the building and a quarter-acre of land from Mr. W. J. Taylor. Thus having a free hand, she at once matured plans to enlarge and improve the premises to make them suitable for her growing business. The result being that she consulted Mr Roach, contractor, of Heidelberg, put the matter in his hands, and now he has completed in a very satisfactory manner and up-to-date style extensive improvements. A large addition, of very neat and attractive design, with three large windows, has been built right along the front of the old building, and the counters and inside fittings are very neat and convenient, harmonizing well with the attractive outside appearance. Miss Williams has now got in a large now stock of goods, and is making extensive arrangements for a “reopening week," commencing 2nd April, during which time she will make 10 per cent reduction on all cash purchases in the form of gifts of that value. Miss Williams has gone to considerable expense and liability both, in the enlargement and improvement of the premises and in purchasing additional stock. We therefore trust that the public will stand by her by heartily and en masse patronizing her re-opening effort to show their appreciation of pluck in this advance movement. Charles Cockcroft born Bundanoon, NSW, 1885, died 1966 and Annie Cockcroft (nee Green) born Lismore, NSW, 1881, died 1943. They are buried together in Eltham Cemetery. On 28 Nov 1931 C.R. Nicholls offered for auction the General Store and attached house he had built on the corner of York Street and Main Road in late 1925. The property was purchased by Charles and Annie Cockcroft from which they lived and ran their grocery business. Following the death of Annie in 1943, and prior to 1949, Charles sold the business and moved farming at Jeeralang North near Traralgon in Gippsland. View looking across Main Road to Wingrove Cottage (c.1950s), former home Charles Symons Wingrove. Charles Wingrove was a prominent figure in Victorian local government, as secretary to the Eltham District Road Board and Shire Council from 1858 to 1904, and, as Shire Engineer and Secretary to the Heidelberg Road Board. He was part of the Committee to establish the Church of England at Eltham. The Wingroves were an important pioneer family of Eltham and Wingrove Cottage is one of the most important heritage buildings in Eltham as one of the few surviving 19th century buildings. Reputedly built in 1858, Wingrove Cottage was recorded in the 1859-60 Eltham Road District rates book as a brick house owned and occupied by Wingrove with a Net Annual Value (NAV) of ₤30. In 1861, the year the Church opened, Wingrove's house was identified as a two -roomed brick cottage. Charles Wingrove is buried with other members of his family in the cemetery at St Katherine’s Church, St. Helena. This image is believed to have been incorporated in a presentation by Russell Yeoman to the 10 November 2004 Society meeting on "Significant Trees, Wildflowers and Local Gardens."This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The situation looked hopeless but one of our members had an idea on how to salvage them; after all, we had nothing to lose. In the end we were able to separate the film strips and remove most of the paper residue except some of the adhesive. The film was scanned and even though suffering from various light issues; fading, possible exposure problems and a yellow shadow cast by the adhesive residue, the detail and historical information they contain has been rescued. Also visible is a kerosene streetlight and Jarrold family cottage The pond was drained by Council in 1932 due to claims of mosquitoes though locals such as Thekla Jarrold and John Clark disputed this and protested to Council about the draining. It was in this news article that Thekla stated she had lived there 39 years and John Clark 22 years without cause for concern. John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. Jarrold Cottage built c.1853, also known as 'White Cloud", located at 701 Main Road, Eltham, opposite Dalton Street. The house remains intact and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database and considered historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. The cottage was originally located closer to the Diamond Creek but was subject to flooding. It was dragged by horse to the present site shown, which was chosen for the higher ground that had been created as a result of land fill being deposited here from the quarry further around the bend on Main Road (site of present-day Eltham Primary School carpark) where the stone had been quarried for building the State School in Dalton Street. It had previously been rented for use as a Police Station / residence prior to the building of the permanent police house and station at the corner of Maria and Brougham streets in 1859. Eltham Plumbing Supplies (Lennie Whiteway Plumbing) located on the right side of the street. It later became the Eltham Bookshop and sold cane ware as well. On the corner with Main Road is the local branch of the State Bank of Victoria. The building still stands and is the present day Westpac bank branch.
