1985 was the 150 anniversary of Victoria. Moorabin, Mordialloc, Sandringham and Phillip Island Councils organised a Cavalcade of Transport which included a re-enactment of a mail coach ride from Melbourne to Phillip Island in 1869. This trip was by Mr Ray Tovell at the invitation of William Harbison to stay with him at Phillip Island. Citizens were to dress in period costume and each municipality was to hand a letter containing local information to the coach driver along the route..Historical8 pages of typed letters and documents explaining the reasons for and details of the occasion. Uniform, Warrnambool Fire Brigade, Mid 20th century
This is a complete uniform of the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade in the mid 20th century. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, located today in Mortlake Road, Warrnambool, was established in 1863. The formation was prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade has a long proud history of service to the people of Warrnambool and district for over 150 years. The uniform belonged to John (Jack) Sizeland, a firefighter for over 37 years. He retired in 1977. This uniform is of some significance as it shows the type of uniform worn by Warrnambool firefighters in the mid 20th century. It is also of importance because it belonged to a local firefighter, Jack Sizeland. This is a Warrnambool Fire Brigade uniform consisting of:- .1 A black cloth single-breasted jacket lined with black and white material. It has four silver metal buttons down the front and two on the top pocket lapels. The buttons have the inscription ‘Country Fire Authority Victoria’. There are two red and black cloth tabs stitched on the top of the sleeves (‘Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade’). The belt is stitched at the back and loose at the front. .2 Black cloth trousers with a red braid stripe down each leg. .3 Black leather belt with a silver-coloured buckle. .4 Black officer-type hat with red plastic lining, a plastic peaked front with a green backing, a red and black braid around the rim with two metal buttons and a silver-coloured metal badge of the Country Fire Authority. .5 Black cloth (polyester) tie with orange lining. Clothing - Belt decoration
She was nearing the end of her voyage, close inshore off Cape Otway at Curdies Inlet (now called Schomberg Reef), east of Peterborough and 150 miles westward of Melbourne. When the wind suddenly dropped the ship drifted onto an uncharted reef and became stuck fast. There was no loss of life ans all the passengers, crew and mails were taken off by a passing coastal steamer, the Queen, out of Port Fairy the following morning. The passengers' luggage and some of the cargo was rescued, but the weather worsened and work was abandoned and cargo littered the beach. The wreck was sold for salvage to local merchants: two were drowned in attempts to reach her. It became a popular wreck site for diving and over 100 relics have been handed in. The bell of the ship is in the Warrnambool Museum, southern Victoria. Programme - Warrnambool Eisteddfod 1991, 1991
This is a 1991 program for the City of Warrnambool Eisteddfod. This Eisteddfod was first held in 1975 when the Rotary Club of Warrnambool organized a community festival attracting 150 entrants. Following this the Warrnambool City Council became the organizer of this event. Today the Warrnambool Eisteddfod is dedicated to showcasing local talents in speech, drama, music, dance, calisthenics and debating in an annual event that goes over 40 days and has over 1000 entrants. A highlight is the Aria Award for the best senior vocalist. This program is of some interest as it gives details of the events held in the Warrnambool Eisteddfod in 1991. This is a booklet of 84 pages. It has a blue and white cover and printed material. This includes office bearers of the Eisteddfod, advertisements, a program of events with the names of entrants, a list of sponsors and some annotated pages indicating the winning entrants. Mrs June Hoffman of Mount Beauty recently donated this beautiful picture. It is the original artist impression of the Snowman outside Snowlands. The Snowman was constructed in the 70's after Mr S K Pearce commissioned Polish artist/sculptor Andy Lomini. Mr Lomini is well known for his oil paintings but also created the Big Trout in Jindabyne, one of the 150 'big' things in Australia. The Snowman was carted into Falls Creek in 3 pieces on the back of a truck.This item is significant because it is the artist's impression of a major artwork commissioned for Falls Creek.A photo of the original artist's impression for a statue of a snowman which is located in Falls Creek. Postcard - Child Soldier 2, 1914-1918
This is number 23 of 27 items in the Daisy Vickers collection of World War One memorabilia. These items were sent or given to Daisy Ogier (nee Vickers) during World War One by Corporal Arthur Anderson who enlisted from Warrnambool in 1915 at the age of 21. He served in Egypt and France and returned to Australia in 1919. Daisy Ogier (1907-1987) was a student and then a teacher at Warrnambool Technical School with her early teaching years there from 1925 to 1936 and in 1949. She became the head mistress from 1950 to 1963 and in 1968. She officially retired in 1976. Daisy Vickers was one of the best loved and dedicated teachers that the school ever had. She married the Reverend Fred Ogier and continued her association with the school after her husband's death. Keywords This card is interesting because of its association with World War One and two local people Daisy Vickers and Arthur Anderson This postcard has an image of a child soldier smoking a pipe, holding a gun and with a bottle at his feet. Transformer Lamp System, late 1950's
This transformer lamp system, which has a dial to transform 240 volts to a minimum of 32 volts was used by electrical technicians to inspect internal parts of the large generators (even in small confined spaces). The reason for the reduction of the 240 volts to the 32 volts was for the safety of the inspector. The SEC Victoria Hydro Scheme's electrical generators are powered by the hydro force of "stored" water at a higher altitude. The establishment of both the NSW and Victorian Hydro schemes was achieved from the mid 1900's to the 1960's. At this the point in time the need for additional power sources to quench both an industrial and domestic demand for electricity was purely an economic and not and environmental (carbon reduction) factor. This hydro scheme was instigated by "the Government of the day" as a bold move and was the major force of the World War II refugee and "technical" workforce inclusion of skilled and unskilled migration into the Australian environment. Although this mass "invasion" of workers with families was thought of in some circles as intrusive, the expansion of population post war years and its integration into the Australian rural sector, produced the multi- lingual multi-cultural diversity of later years.This transformer lamp is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it was introduced as a very small part of the explosion of human resources into the valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both industrial and larger residential community. This evolution in the valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape but also the socio-economic expansion which permitted other "tourist" based industries into the valley. This is also a specific electronic item which was manufactured in Melbourne and not sourced from Europe or Asia. This demonstrates the fast evolution of Australian technology to a high standard compatible to that of the rest of the world.This heavy hand held electrical transformer (transforms 240 volts to 32 Volts) an has one leather handle on the top with three small (gauze filtered) air holes. It also has two 2 pin directional cable distribution (clipsal) in/out points 10amps / 240 volts. There is one glassed in volts/ac meter and one variable switch (180 to 150 voltage in settings of 10 volt increments.There are two vents (one on each of the smaller sides). There is also one three pin electrical lead coming out from the top.On one side is a manufacturer's plaque with "ELECTRONIC A & R EQUIPMENT MELBOURNE" and underneath "TYPE 1719, PRI V. 180 250" underneath "V.A. 1250" underneath "CYC 50" underneath "SEC V. 115" underneath "SEC A. 10 . 8". Uncompleted application form to purchase First Victory Loan Bonds and mark the application 'credit City of St Kilda quota'. The bonds, which would mature with interest after the war, were administered by the Commonwealth War Loans Organisation. Twelve major Government war loans (called Liberty, Austerity, Special or Victory loans) were offered during World War II. This bottle was used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was built in the 1950's specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.Clear glass Baby's Feeding Formula bottle with a gauge on 2 faces - 1 with mls and 1 with ounces. The bottle holds 240 ml and 8 ounces. The third side also has heavy embossing as has the base. The base is rectangular with curved corners. The sides are straight with a gradual taper to a narrow neck which has a heavy lip on it (for the teat).Front: At the top 240 ml, 200, 150, 100, 50 with horizontal lines marking every 10 ml. downwards. Side: 8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1. with a horizontal line in between each number and 'ounces' along side of this gauge. Originally owned and used by Zemster Brothers of "Brook Mount" Shellbourne.Known as "Aunty Jack"Large 4 wheeled 9 HP single cylinder (horizontal) steam engine, designed to be towed. Front wheels smaller than rear. Folding smoke stack with spark arrestor. Fire box and smoke stack painted black, boiler and steam cylinder green, wheels grey. In working order but engine is connected to an independent steam/air source to be operated for display purposes. 150 cm flywheel on LHS looking forward toward the front. Timber front turntable and back brake pad assembly. Brass water drain tap on firebox. Plate Pottery, Serving Plate Parramatta, Late 19th century
The settlement of Parramatta is one of the earliest inland settlements in Australia being settled in November 1788 just months after the arrival of the First Fleet to Sydney. Originally named Rose Hill it was given the name Parramatta which closely approximated the original Aboriginal name for the area. Being within a reasonable distance to the settlement of Sydney and in an area of fertile soil, it soon became a successful farming region. It was proclaimed a city in 1938. This plate possibly belongs to either the commemoration of 100 or 150 years of settlement of the area, although the stamp on the plate is the same drawing as that on the official invitation for 1938While this plate has no local historical links , it does have significance belonging to one of the earliest settlements in Australia.White oval plate with fluted edge with gold on rim. The Smeaton Presbyterian Church was built in 1859 of locally made brick, and opened in 1860. The building committee was . Messrs. John Hepburn, W. McAlpine, W. Anderson, S. Moore, W. H. Clarke and W. Miller. It cost an estimated 1,200 pounds, and was assisted by Captain John Hepburn who donated 5 acres of land and 150 pounds for the church. The rest was contributed by the settlers and their employees. Around 1890, the outside brickwork was given a coat of cement, which has improved with age. Yields information and demonstrates aspects about Ballarat's destination rolls used in trams up to 1967 when the rolls were replaced with the opposite colour arrangementDestination roll white lettering on black background used in Ballarat until late 1967, replaced by black letters on white background. Layout of individual destinations follows that shown in K.S.Kings, "Ballarat Tramways" - see image file for copy. Main letters are 150 high. Has a short section of white on the top of the roll and larger section at bottom. On rear of roll, has abbreviated destinations painted in white paint on black gloss paint to enable drivers to locate easier the individual destinations.
