This ceramic tankard mug was produced for Melbourne Legacy to honour their Patron. The Patron of Legacy is usually the Governor of Victoria, since the very early days of Legacy. It appears to be taken from a photo of General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCMG, DSO, KStJ., who was Governor of Victoria from 1949. The date made is unknown but it believed to be early 1950s. Similar mugs were produced to honour Legatees Stan Savige and Syd Birrell and were estimated to have been produced in late 1940's or early 1950s. A similar one was made for the Queen's coronation in 1953. The care of children was a major part of Legacy work in the 1950s, many of whom would have lost their fathers in WWII. The minutes document the fostering of children by individual legatees, and their living conditions at Holmbush. It is clear that the children made do with whatever clothes could be afforded, and they were strongly encouraged to to study. The binnacle was originally from a lifeboat of the tug 'Melbourne' previously 'Howard Smith'. When the vessel sank at Gellibrand [Williamstown], the binnacle was under water for about one month. These eight books that make up The Victorian Readers, one for each of the grades that then comprised the primary school, were first published by the Victorian Education Department between 1928 and 1930. Second editions of all but the First Book, with a few changes in content, appeared some ten years later. One-quarter of the content was required to be Australian with the remainder from Britain, the United States and Europe. This was originally the Sandhust Mining Exchange and as such was the oldest purpose built exchange in Australia and was one of only two in regional Australia. It was initially established in the 1850's to service the miners of the area. It's first double story incarnation as the Bendigo Stock Exchange, contained up to 2000 stockbrokers and 5000 shareholders. In 1871 the building burnt to the ground and the new and current building was completed in 1872.
