An early black and white photograph taken near the entrance gatehouse to "The Hermitage" at Narbethong in Victoria.An early black and white photograph taken near the entrance gatehouse to "The Hermitage" at Narbethong in Victoria. "The Hermitage" was built by photographer John William Lindt as a home and guesthouse in 1894. John Lindt had previously photographed the mountain scenery of the Black Spur and purchased 71 acres and subseqently built his home and guesthouse from where he continued his career. "The Hermitage had a garden designed by John Lindt's friend, Ferdinand von Mueller, who was at one stage the Director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The garden featured New Guinea tree houses from which John Lindt made frequent panoramas of his property and the surrounding forest of towering mountain ash. Aged 81 Lindt died of heart failure during disastrous bushfires on 19 February 1926 at the Hermitage. Train Destination Disc Until the 1980s Melbourne suburban trains used a system of discs by day, and illuminated market lights by night, to indicate their destination. Placed on the front of trains to advise a Signalman in the Signal Box the destination of the train. This disk was used on NK1 the Whitfield Motor when it was used by Puffing Billy Railway Info from the diagrams from the 1953 Victorian Railways General Appendix. Black-and-white photo of Mary Norman-Bail, other staff members, and pupils of her Pathfinder School. Date is not known, but ca1950s.This is one of a collection of several hundred photos, books, documents and teaching aids donated to Langi Morgala Museum by Jessica Norman-Bail (or by her estate). Almost all the collection relates to Jessica's mother, the photographer, artist and educator Mary Norman-Bail, and to Mary Norman-Bail's Pathfinder School, which was located in Ararat for several years in the first half of the twentieth century. In total, the Norman-Bail collection provides an illuminating picture of the unique Pathfinder school, though much of the collection is yet to be analysed. The Langi Morgala Norman-Bail collection is of local signficance; but further research into the collection, and into Norman-Bail's work and ideas, may enhance the significance further. The Crossways historic inn survived the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires thanks to the efforts of its c-owner Greg Cherry and, in the days after the fires, provided a much-needed refuge to the Marysville community and firefighters. Jim Wallace was born in Dumfries in Scotland and emigrated to Australia with his family at age 6. He arrived and settled in Marysville in 1922 and ended up working for the Barton Brothers looking after their touring cars and their garage. He met Marj in 1928 and they married in 1930. Jim and another well-known local, Clarrie Smith, had spoken about showing the 'talkies' in the local hall and then subsequently had local builder, Harold Cuzens, build the Marysville Theatre in 1932. The Marysville Theatre was located on Murchison Street. The solid concrete building was used as a Theatre from 1932 to 1970. The building was then purchased by The Darmody Family and was used as an Arts and Crafts Centre for two years from 1975. The building was then purchased by Norman and Rosemary Fiske in 1977 and converted into a restaurant called The Pumpernickel. Nicholas John Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying Louisa Master in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. This item is part of a group of five green display boards with photographs of sheep. This item is associated with the New South Wales Graziers Association world tour of merino sheep 1928/9.Three black and white photographs and printed paper mounted on green display board. Photographs depict sheep and men. The display board has pin holes in each corner.Front: [handwritten] Black Sheep. / [printed] There are two kinds of black in sheep. The / usual one is recessive to white, while in the Kar- / akul (Persian), the Piebald, and Black Welsh / Mountain breeds the black colour is dominant to / white. The first photograph shows a recessive / black Wensleydale, the middle a dominant Welsh black. / Sometimes the black is modified into a grey as / the sheep gets older. This is seen in the last / photograph of a Black Welsh Sheep.
