Enid Beatrice Gilchrist (1917-2007) was a fashion designer best know for her development of self-drafting dressmaking patterns. 17 Fellows Street Kew was originally owned and occupied by the architect Henry Kemp. Kemp had arrived in Australia in 1886 and this was therefore one of the first of the many buildings he was to design in Melbourne. While late Victorian in date, the house is an interesting precursor of the Edwardian architecture produced by Kemp. Somewhat awkwardly composed with steep gables, a rectangular castellated tower and slated single storeyed verandahs projecting from the overall box-like form, the house contains features common to the 1880s such as the use of polychromy in the brickwork and slates cladding the roof. (Sanderson 1988). The historian Dorothy Rogers established that at one stage it was the home of Dr John Dale - Chief Medical Officer of the City of Melbourne. This photograph predates later renovations to the rear of the property.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. An article in the Box Hill 'Reporter' (11 October 1907, p.2) refers to the presentation of the artefact to the Kew Town Hall. The report records: 'Presentation to Kew's Ex-Mayor In the mayor's room at Kew on Tuesday evening, Ex-Mayor Cr Wishart was made the recipient of a handsomely-illuminated and exquisitely-framed testimonial as a mark of appreciation by his colleagues of the highly satisfactory manner in which he had discharged the duties appertaining to the mayoral office. .... A framed group of the metropolitan mayors was subsequently presented by Cr Wishart as an addition to the pictures hung in the mayor's room.'The newspaper report in the Box Hill Reporter positively identifies the artefact and how it was placed in the Mayor's Room in the Walpole Street Town Hall. 'Test Cricket' was one of the most popular board games in the pre television era. John Sands Pty Ltd, the publisher, was an Australian bookseller and stationer founded in 1837 and produced board games from 1929-78.Board game consisting of a rectangular cardboard piece illustrated with a cricket ground, players and a scoreboard. Two semi-circles have been cut away from the background and are used to control the progress of the game. The right hand game control is moved to 'ball' position (1-8) and back to start which indicates the type of delivery shown in the window. The left hand control is moved to 'type of delivery bowled' and back to the start which reveals the number of runs scored or method of dismissal which is shown in the window. The scoreboard is operated by three circular wheels that show the result of runs and wickets. An oval handle is at the upper centre. The Kew Historical Society’s collection includes a wide range of leisure objects. Many of the items are European-made, generally of British origin, however there are a number that were made for the Australian market by Australian manufacturers. In the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of games produced for children and adults. These included: arcade games, board games, playing cards and puzzles. A representative sample, many now rare survivors, can be found in the collection. Chinese Chequers was first commercially produced in 1938, although it is not Chinese, nor a form of checkers. The maker of the game, John Sands Pty Ltd produced board games between 1929 and 1978. REF: SHNN article Oct/Nov 1991: Pharmacy was purchased from Mr Nye by C L Mitton in 1933; later moved to 139 Union Road. Research: Stanley Morris Nye (born Ballarat in 1889, son of a Methodist minister; served AIF in WW1) moved to Surrey Hills from Auburn after 1922. He was the first occupant of 131 Union Road which was built in 1924. He is listed in the 1924,1927 and 1931 electoral rolls at 86 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. He died aged 44 years in December 1933 and Charles Leslie Mitton took over the business. Charles Leslie Mitton was practising in Newmarket prior to taking over the pharmacy in 1933, the year he also married Ethel Sylvia Stevenson. They lived at 65 Union Road until c1940 when they moved to Kenmare Street, Box Hill North.
