Clothing - Camisole, c 1870
This delicate camisole was donated with a note enclosed stating the following : “hand embroidered cotton camisole c 1870”. However it is believed to be silk net with silk machine made lace insertions and silk hand embroidery (Lace Group Embroiderers Guild 1/3/12).The camisole came in to being in the Victorian era. The wearing of corsets to ‘improve’ body shape was mandatory and the chemise being long was considered too bulky to cover the corset. The camisole was developed being short and light and was worn over the corset and under the bodice of the outer garment. This beautiful camisole would most likely have been used under evening wear. The Amess family owned Churchill Island from 1872 to 1929. Clothing - Muff, Seal Fur
After European settlement in 1788 Australian Fur Seals were hunted intensively from 1798 until 1825 for meat, oil and their skins. The growing Industrial Revolution called out for oil which was readily sourced from seals along with their valuable fur. Indigenous people had been sustainably harvesting seals for their meat and their skins .and the European sealers often coerced or kidnapped Aboriginal women for their knowledge of hunting seals. After 1825 the seal population had been decimated and therefore the hunt was no longer economically viable, but it wasn’t until 1923 that the Australian Government legislated to stop the hunting of seals altogether. In the time of the Amess family residence on Churchill Island it was perfectly legitimate to shoot any seal that interfered with fishing and furs were tanned and lined with fine fabrics to create items of apparel. Seal fur has a soft velvety feel when stroked in the direction of growth. A muff was a thick tubular piece of fur or other material used by women and girls to keep the hands warm and it was also used as a handbag, The Amess family owned Churchill Island from 1872 to 1929. This lace collection was owned and contributed to by four generations of Amess women, see above.Seal fur muff, with lining and some fraying on edges. seal, fur, churchill island, amess fur collection, janet, jane, amess, frances -

August Vogeler was born in Minden, Germany in 1819, and emigrated to the United States to Baltimore when 20 years old and entered the employ of the wholesale drug firm Smith & Atkinson. Five years later he established the firm of A. Vogeler & Company manufacturing drugs and chemicals and eventually built up a drug business and manufactured products such as St. Jacob’s Oil, Dr. August Koenig’s Hamburg Drops, Koenig’s Hamburg Breast Tea, Diamond Vera-Cura and Dr. Bull’s Family Medicines. Vogeler & Company was located for a long period of time at Liberty and German Streets in Baltimore City and had an impressive multi-block operation. Charles A. Vogeler, August’s son, grew the business and was one of the pioneers of progressive patent medicine advertising and employed many novel schemes. Another son, Jerome Vogeler was also engaged in the drug business. Previously, in 1873, August Vogeler acquired the medicinal compounds of Reverend Dr. Bull (not the Dr. Bull in Louisville). Eventually in 1877, with the help of his partner, Adolph Meyer, the company promoted and sold Dr. Bull’s Family Medicines until shortly after the death of Charles Vogeler in 1882. In 1883, A. C. Meyer purchased all interests of his Vogeler partners and remained in business until his death 0n 4 February 1914. Elliot-type obstetrical forceps used by Colin Noel de Garis
These forceps belonged to the late Colin Noel de Garis. Also donated was a foetal scalpel electrode applicator- see donation form. There is a note that former honorary curator Peter Renou collected the donation. Peter Renou does not recall being involved in the donation.( Source: Grainne Murphy 15 November 2010.) This design of obstetrical forceps, with a screw in the handle, was introduced by George Thomson Elliot (1827-1871), a New York obstetrician. (Source: National Museum of American History, 'Obstetrical forceps') The 'sliding pivot' on the forceps was designed to prevent the compression of the baby's head. (Source: Elliot, GT, 'Description of a new midwifery forceps : having a sliding pivot to prevent compression of the foetal head, with cases', c.1860)"The Elliot forceps and its modifications (Elliot, Tucker-McLane, Tucker-Luikart) have shorter blades and an accentuated cephalic curve that is more suitable for a rounded fetal head that has not undergone extensive molding. In addition, Elliot instruments, because of their overlapping shanks, do not distend the perineum in the same way as the separated shanks of the Simpson-type forceps." (Source: Sakornbut, EL, 'Chapter 18 - Intrapartum Procedures', in Ratcliffe SD et al (eds.), 'Family Medicine Obstetrics', 3rd ed., 2008) Obstetric forceps, Elliot's. Consists of long shanks, made of forged chrome plated metal with metal handle, four finger grips, and distinctive screw and pin at the end of the handles. This screw functioned as a means of regulating the lateral pressure of the handles when in use. obstetric delivery -

They either took place at a popular seaside locations or at popular picnic sites in the nearby hills around Melbourne. The first annual picnic was held in 1918. The Ithacan Greeks worked long hours in family food and restaurant businesses in Melbourne. On Sundays the shops were closed so it was seen as an opportunity to relax outdoors away from the city. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society continues this tradition holding an annual picnic in late summer.A black and white panoramic photograph of a large picnic group of men, women and children standing in an open area with trees around the perimeter. Document - Photocopy of Churchill Island Visitors' Book 1881 - 1902, 12/08/2015
Churchill Island Heritage Farm has a long and interesting history. From 1872, Samuel Amess was the primary owner of Churchill Island, having purchased it from the Rogers family. During his time on the Island, he built the main house and developed the surrounding land and gardens significantly as a holiday house away from the pollution of Melbourne. This photocopy of the original visitor's book (whose location is unknown) provides a valuable insight into the visitors who were regularly hosted at Churchill Island by the Amess family.Photocopy of 92 page document of the 1881 - 1902 Churchill Island Visitors' book containing handwritten entries from people who stayed at the Island during the time of Samuel Amess and his son (also named Samuel). Photograph - Workers, Cardboard department, J Kitchen & Sons, 1920s
This photo has been in the Hegarty famly collection since the twenties. It shows a group of workers from the Cardbox Department of J Kitchen & Sons Pty Ltd, of Ingles Street, Port Melbourne. These workers made boxes for soap by hand, i.e. presentation boxes for Christmas gifts. There are three sets of sisters in this photo: Lily and Alma Eddy, who travelled from Coburg; Mabel and Florrie McPherson and Alice and Myrtle Mott, all of Cruikshank Street. Mrs Myrtle Mott Bennett of Box Hill, was able to identify Millie Robinson (front row, 2nd from left) of Graham Street, Alice Mott (back row, 3rd from left). She is 2nd from left in front row. After all these years, it was hard to remember who was who! Alice Mott started working at Kitchen's at 14 year old, and her younger sister Myrtle started there at 15 years, having worked for a year at Swallows. Myrtle was to spend 15 years there prior to her marriage in 1939, and received a gold watch for long service She feels that working at Kichens was a bit more prestigious than Swallows. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly titled Discover Bendigo The Mine Flooding Crisis - Finale of the Victoria Quartz by James Lerk. The lack of suitable machinery, insufficient knowledge of where the water was coming from, need for Government support, and the pegged price of gold, all contributed to the cessation of deep mining. The Victoria Quartz decided to allow tributers for work the upper levels. By 1913, the Company found it uneconomic to allow the tributers to continue working the upper levels and the poppet head and machinery were sold. During the Great Depression Ernest Smith, Davic Holden, Jack Harrison and David Patullo worked above the water line and did well enough to help their families from the worst effects of the Great Depression.
