Flooding of the Yarra Valley, including that section of the Yarra bordering Kew and Kew East in the north and west of the municipality, was a regular occurrence. Extreme flood events of the Yarra River are recorded to have occurred in 1891, 1901, 1916, 1923 and 1934. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. While floods continued after the development of the Upper Yarra Reservoir (construction 1948-57), the regularity and extent of these inundations diminished. During the nineteenth century, the land abutting the south side of the Yarra in Kew was devoted to dairy farming. The City Engineer's Department within the former City of Kew, was responsible for public works, including street beautification. This photograph was held in the archives of the Department and was subsequently gifted to the Kew Historical Society. The dwelling is representative of the development of the Georgian Revival style in the 1920s and 30s and its popularity amongst the upper-middle classes as a result of the work of William Hardy Wilson and Professor Leslie Wilkinson. It is of importance as a fine and largely intact designer/builder example of the Georgian Revival style, with American Georgian Revival influences. The dwelling embodies the principal characteristics of the style. American Georgian Revival influences are noted in the deep eaves with modillions, central broken pediment, brick quoins and presentation of the central porch. The garden wall, with arched opening, in the side setback appears to be an early or original landscape feature, based on the comparable brick work detail construction with that of the house. Considering this, it is the only early landscape feature extant which assists in providing some understanding of the original landscape layout of the property. Those sections of Studley Park closest to the River Yarra were set aside as parkland in the 1850s. After initial discussions about whether it was a suitable site for a Government House, much of the land was instead gazetted in the 1860s as the location for a new lunatic asylum, to expand overcrowded mental health facilities at the Yarra Bend Asylum on the other side of the river at Fairfield. Those sections of Studley Park bounded by the Yarra River, Studley Park Road, Princess Street and Fellows Street were subdivided and sold at the Crown Land Sales in 1851. Kew Junction is the intersection of five major roads - Denmark Street, High Street, High Street South, Studley Park Road and Princess Street. The original widening of High Street in the 1930s expanded that street by removing shops on the south side of the street from Cotham Road to Denmark Street. Although probably built some time earlier, the first mention in the Rate Books of the property later known as 'Wimba Lodge' appears in the entry for 1870 when the property, owned by John Sharpe Denbigh, a civil servant, was given an N.A.V. of £72. Denbigh did however occupy a house in Cotham Road in 1863, and it is possible that was the same premises'. The house was occupied by Sharp until at least May 1876 when the 'family residence ... was auctioned' to Carlington George Edmund Marston, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. At the time of the auction the house was described thus: The residence and grounds of the late J.S. Dendigh, situate in the most elevated part of Cotham Road Kew. The grounds comprise an area of 4a Or 29p or thereabouts, and have a frontage to Cotham-road of 4 chains. The house has two large rooms in front, with 6ft hall built of brick, bay and side windows (plate glass), four rooms of wood behind with slate roofs, bathroom and closets, detached kitchen and servant's room, large shed with washing boiler, pantry and cellar under, brick and cement tank, and the Yan Yean laid onto house and grounds, cowshed, pigstye, &c, the whole securely fenced. The front entrance is flanked by two polygonal bay windows, and a verandah with a concave corrugated iron roof returns around three facades, and accentuates the projections of the windows. The Kew War Memorial was planned and constructed at the apex of Cotham Road and High Street, Kew. It was built to commemorate those soldiers from Kew who served in the First World War. High Street, Kew is the main Road in Kew. It was once also known as Bulleen Road, or Main Street. This section of the road is in Kew, although the narrow section on the right hand side of the photo is now Kew East. High Street progresses through a number of significant road junctions: beginning at Barkers Road; progressing through the intersection of Studley Park Road, Denmark Street and Princess Street at Kew Junction; branching left at the junction with Cotham Road; before reaching the junction with Valerie Street and Harp Road. What is now Kew East Primary School was opened on its current site in Kitchener Street in 1923. The Kew East and Mont Albert Heritage Gap Study (August 2020) established that: 'Kew East Primary School No. 3136 is historically significant for the evidence it provides of an early phase in the development of Kew East which gathered momentum from the 1920s, as housing developed rapidly and the population increased in response to the extension of the High Street tram to Harp Road then Burke Road then improved tram connections between the area and the city.'A rare and early photograph of the school taken four years after its construction. The Alexandra Gardens in Cotham Road, Kew were opened by the Governor of Victoria in 1910. The first curator of the gardens was George Pockett, who with his brother is credited with the layout of the gardens. The gardens were constructed on land originally owned by the King family of 'Madford' in Wellington Street. The Alexandra Gardens in Cotham Road, Kew were opened by the Governor of Victoria in 1910. The first curator of the gardens was George Pockett, who with his brother is credited with the layout of the gardens. The gardens were constructed on land originally owned by the King family of 'Madford' in Wellington Street. The Engineer's Department of the former City of Kew had an extensive collection of photograph of sites in Kew requiring documentation to inform public works. It also kept images of engineering practice in other parts of Melbourne, and overseas, that could be used as models for local activity. Many of these photographs (and plans) were donated to our collection in the 1980s. A number of the photographs are annotated, either on the image itself or on the reverse.This photograph, and others sourced from the City Engineer's Department of the former City of Kew, qualifies as an important record of local streets, public works, street beautification, and engineering techniques of the period. Original black and white photographic positive of automobiles and buildings in Denmark Street, Kew, immediately before the road enters Kew Junction. On the left is McKeon Motors and a retailer of Insulwool, while in the distance is the pharmacy on the corner of High Street and Princess Street (later demolished during the widening of Kew Junction). Notable are the bluestone guttering and what appears to be vacant land on the apex of the triangle of land bounded by High Street South, Denmark Street and Barkers Road. This site was the original location of O'Shaughnessy's 'Kew Hotel', and after the destruction by fire of the latter, the location of a service station. 'Kew, Kew East, Balwyn & Balwyn North are located approximately 7km north east of Melbourne. Four main stormwater drains service the area flowing from south to north. Three of the drains: Deepdene Drain; Balwyn Drain & Glass Creek converge in Kew East just west of Burke Road at Kew High School before discharging into the Yarra River. The fourth drain, Kew Main Drain connects directly with the Yarra River to the West of Glass Creek.'
