This attachment was used in Adelaide by Dr R. Humphrey Marten (1860-1933). He was an English general practitioner who graduated from University College Hospital in 1883. He came to Australia as custodian of a mentally deranged patient. Martins fee allowed him to later return to England and obtain a degree from Cambridge. In 1888 he returned to Adelaide and became a very successful physician and surgeon, said to be the first surgeon in South Australian to have removed a brain tumor in 1901. The brace was later used by Sir Leonard Lindon (1896- 1978) one of the eight founders of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, who had married Marten's daughter.Having been used by two important figures in surgery during the 20th century this item is an excellent representation of the brace described by Eugene Doyen (1859-1916) of Paris in 1896. Artemis Trophy (Sculpured Head) Donor: Marion French Deed of Gift: Yes Marion French donated the trophy in memory of her husband Bill French, who started sailing at SYC in cadet dinghies then at RBYC in 16 foot skiffs, then building several other yachts and finally in the Division 3 yacht Artemis until his death in 1988. The trophy is named after their yacht Artemis and awarded to the winner of a Division 3 race. In 2003 it was changed and awarded to the winner of the Winter Pursuit Series, then again changed and awarded to the winner of Saturday Pursuit Aggregate Series for October to May. E. A. Franklin Memorial Trophy (Cup) Donor: Edward Alfred Franklin Deed of Gift: Yes The trophy was originally donated by past Commodore E. A. Franklin and awarded to the International Star Class. He was Commodore in 1947/50 and again in 1953/55. After his death in 1962, his son Rae Franklin changed the deed of the gift to become the E. A. Franklin memorial trophy and with the decline of the Star Class was for a short time then awarded to the Soling Class, and then to the E22 class. Legacy had its origins in the aftermath of the first World War. General Sir John Gellibrand in 1923 in Hobart established the Remembrance Club which was to assist returned soldiers. He convinced Stanley Savige a returned soldier who had served with Gellibrand to set up a similar group in Melbourne. The Melbourne group was established at Anzac House shortly after. Initially looking to the needs of returned soldiers, by 1925 they had included the care of deceased soldiers’ widows and children a task which continues to the present day. It is an entirely honorary organization. It lists among its objectives as doing all for the children which the father would have been glad to see done for them. The Warrnambool club was founded in 1947 and this booklet lists the office bearers as Chas Watts, I Buzzard, D B de Beaurepaire, A K Browne R Potter, N K Morris, P H Allen, W J Tolmie, J Paterson, b C Stronach, L G Stevens, T b Patrick, R S Robinson, J O Tait. The Warrnambool region covered from Port Campbell north to Pormborneit, through Darlington and Woorndoo and across to Broadwater and Codrington and Port Fairy in the west. In 1947 they had 200 wards under their care.
