Photo by Arthur Woodley. "Narrabeen" formerly a Sydney Harbour cargo ferry, was acquired in 1928. A McFarlane Winch powered a heavy duty Derrick capable of putting an omnibus on board. It was able to be operated by one man - ship's engineer Archie McNeil - Captain Jimmy Clarke. It transported cargo, livestock, passengers and vehicles. Loch Ard was bound for Melbourne in 1878 loaded with passengers and cargo when it ran into a rocky reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: an apprentice, Tom Pearce and a young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy. The wreck of Loch Ard still lies at the base of Mutton Bird Island and much of the cargo has been salvaged. Some was washed up into what is now known as Loch Ard Gorge following the shipwreck. Cargo and artefacts have also been illegally salvaged over many years before protective legislation was introduced. The photograph is significant for its association with the wreck of the Loch Ard. Set two SEC memos that were clipped together with item 9824. 1 - titled "Tramways - Extensions" from the Engineer Manager of Electricity supply department (Melbourne) to the Ballarat manager, dated 7-10-1953 - asking for survey information about housing numbers along each route and the possibility of extending the Victoria St and Mt Pleasant routes. 2 - titled "Tramways -Public Passenger transport" - from the Engineer Manager of Electricity supply department (Melbourne) to the Ballarat manager, dated 12-10-1953 - regarding the recent inquiry in Geelong and that data regarding passenger density per hour and passengers per route would be desirable. MMTB Drawing R1241 Details of Signal Bell refers.Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, bell, striker, bell pull part, three nuts to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Has at both ends, four screw holes that were used to secure the bell to the roof. Has at either end, some letters cast into the section that was used to secure the bell into position. Used by tramways to indicate the position of the person to a passenger or another employee. Most likely made as a general production item by Stokes for tramways and railways.Demonstrates an item made to indicate the wearer's position of the tramway employee.Uniform Badge for a "Conductor". Manufactured by Stokes and Sons, Melbourne. Made from a cast brass item and then nickel plated. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined and rounded to fit on a cap. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable to be sewn or fitted with clips onto a cap.
