HMAS Australia (1) The largest war ship in the Australian fleet was the first flagship of the Australian fleet in WW1. She was Commissiond and paid for by the Australian Goverment to ensure sdequate protection for the Australasion Pacific Region. She had a crew of 900 "Officers and Crew" and was equipted with four sets of 12 inch breech loading guns,side firing torpedos and fourteen 4 inch guns for surface and air contacts. The Soldier on the badge is apparently VX103098 James Aloysious Canty, enlisted 19/7/1942 in Port Moresby age 29 just prior to Kokoda. He had initially enlisted No V42281. One record has him in E Coy 39th Infantry Batt which was the Machine Gun Coy of the Batt when formed. One record shows him being Taken on the Strength of 7th Machine Gun Batt on 2.11.1942. At discharge on 5.12.1945 he is listed as serving in the 39th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Cpl. Pte Albert WARNER (3537) was a driver with 4th Australian Machine Gun Bn. He died in action in France on 18 Aug 1918 and is buried in a cemetery near Picardie (see AWM person records)British War Medal - The medal was struck by the Royal Mint, is a silver disc 36mm in diameter with a straight clasp suspended without swivel. The obverse shows Sir Bertram Mackennal's bare headed effigy of King George V facing left with the legend 'GEORGIVS V BRITT:OMN:REX ET IND:IMD - "George V, King of all the British Isles & Emperor of India". The reverse, designed by William McMillan, shows St George, naked on horseback and armed with a short sword, an allegory of the physical & mental strength which achieved victory of Prussianism. The horse tramples on the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death, a skull and cross bones. In the background are ocean waves and just off centre near the right upper time is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914-1918 appear on the perimeter in the left and right fields respectively. The watered silk ribbon is 32mm wide with 3mm wide royal blue band, 2mm wide black band, 3mm wide white band repeated in reverse order and separated by 16mm wide orange band. Victory Medal - The medal is bronze disc 36mm in diameter with a winged figure of Victory on the obverse. The reverse has the words 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1918', all surrounded by a laurel leaf. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The card was sent by James Henry Wicks to his sister, unknown. After serving in the 7th Batt, J H Wicks transfered to the 5th Machine Gun Batt AIF in France. 1789 Corporal Walter Thomas West was recommended for Military Medal 13th May 1917. Citation: For conspicous gallantry in action at the Hindenburg Line on 3rd May 1917. When he attacked with few bob=mbers an enemy post using MG fire against the right brigade. Having taken up the post he moved down the first trench and with 6 men engaged an enemy party who were resisting the 2nd attack of the tight brigade. Recommended by GOC 6th Australian Infantry Brigade. Lieutenant Walter Thomas West was recommended for MC 21st Ocrober 1918. Citation: During the attack on Montebrehain, east of Peronne on 5th Ocober, 1918, Lt West acted in a skilful and courageous manner when his platoon was held up by an enemy strong post, he rushed forward alone under heavy machine gun fire, threw a bomb at the post and captured the gun and crew of three. Later his flank was being held up by a strong post manned by the German guns in cemetary. Lt. West crawled round to the right and rushed the post. One ran he killed 3 of the nemy and took 3 prisoners. The men in the other post ran off with their gun and so escaped. Throughout the day he led his platoon with skil and when the company commander was killed assumed charge and supervised the consolidation of the line with great activity and courage.
