East Charlton Hotel built in 1875 by John Flug to replace his original log and bark inn built 1863. The first inn was about 100 metres behind this building and it was Charlton's first commercial building. The hotel was rebuilt by C. Klug in 1891. It was rebuilt as a two storey building in 1925. This new church built on 6 Clarkmount Road Sassafras was opened on 30th January, 1937 by Moderator Right-Rev. A Irving Davidson, M.A. It replaced the Log Cabin Presbyterian Church which erected in 1925 as a memorial to G H Derry, the first Chairman of the Recreation Reserve. This copy of "My Grampain Rose" belonged to Glenda Hust, who donated it to the society. Ruby Wharrie was a Stawell resident for many years. The Wharrie family built and lived in the Log Cabin, Darlington Road Stawell. Bass Strait passenger ship Nairana. Built for Bass Strait ferry operator Huddart Parker & Co. Ltd. of Melbourne during World War One, the Nairana was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and completed as a seaplane carrier, HMS Nairana. Serving from 1917 to 1920 participating in the capture of Archangel during the Bolshevik Revolution. After 1920 she was decommissioned as a seaplane carrier and returned to her Australian owners crossing Bass Strait until she was laid up in 1948. Just off Port Phillip Heads on April 12 1936, a strong wave struck the Nairana, tipping her over for two minutes before she righted herself again. During the horrifying two minutes, four people were drowned, and eight people were injured. The ship was reportedly carrying roughly one tonne of concrete in the hull when she tipped. Reports from the local papers said that it was a tidal wave meanwhile others were saying it was either an earthquake or a total lie. A later paper said that the ship had been caught in a rip at the mouth of the bay, causing the tragedy. The S.S Nairana, was sold for £4,000 (over $170,200 in today’s money!) in 1951 after two years of being stranded on the beach at Port Melbourne, when the moorings broke one night during a storm and drifted ashore, causing her to wreck.Items associated with the TSS/HMS Nairana in its military and civilian roles and items relating to Capt. This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. He appears to have served aboard a number of vessels including merchant vessels commissioned into wartime service in WW2.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. Photograph shows members of the Bubb family cutting ironbark logs in the Anglesea forest for their sawmill. The sawmill was established after WW2 to provide work for his sons. The sons who worked at the mill were Arthur, Harold (aka Jimmy), and Robert all of whom are buried at Bellbrae cemetery. Donated by Wilfred Dungan on behalf of the Dungan family Collection originally used on the property of the late Dr Rae Dungan in Falls Creek Rd Olinda, purchased in the late 1930s from Olinda pioneers Harry and Minnie Holden. Also on the property of late May Farndon of Farndon’s and Falls Rd Mt Dandenong – aunt of Dr Rae William Dungan and also an early pioneer. Family holidays and weekends involved use of these sorts of farm implements plus working with horses. Post-war, the Olinda hand tools and machinery moved to the Shady Creek, Nilma North area where bush, pasture and cows had replaced the Olinda property. Wilfred well remembers being on one end of the crosscut saws cutting fence posts, logs and timber under “the tireless and vocal instruction” of a red headed local Darnum Rd legend called Harry Collyer. “He drove an old Rugby car and nearly pulled me through the logs with every cut!” Curved blade, painted black. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948.Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district .
