Photograph, Matheson's Home
The Nunawading orchard was purchased in 1920 by Mary Lilian Matheson from Florence Rebecca Course for a sum of 1050 Sterling Pound. In 1988 the Federal & State government allocated $125,000 to the Nunawading Council towards the purchase of the house, outbuildings and the orchard facing Springvale Road, as it was representative of one of the last working orchards in the Nunawading district. The property has now been vacant for many years (2011) and is secured with window bars and security services. Lately a large cyprus tree crashed onto the largest outbuilding and it was removed.8 coloured photographs (a-h) of the Matheson house and orchard on Springvale Road, East Burwood. Photo depicts the interior of a shearing shed with shearing taking place. The shed is located in New South Wales and this photo would appear to date from the turn of the century. Presumably the Philadelphia Museum inscription on the front indicates that either this photo is from their collection (unlikely) or that it was commissioned by them for selling / distribution.Photograph, 'Shearing Sheep', 1900-10 (Philadelphia Museum). Nails, C1900
Nails such as these were used for building purposes, probably in the construction of house and shed roofs. The jar has no significance, being a discarded household item used to contain the nails. The nails have no known local provenance but are of interest as they date back over 100 years and are retained to show the type of nails used in the past. This is a glass jar with a ridged base and a metal screw top lid. There is etched printing on one side of the jar. The jar contains many old metal nails, possibly handmade. They are mostly rectangular in shape with flattened heads. Photograph - Digital copy of photograph, Former Griffith family home, Banoon Road, Eltham, c.1955
Former family home of Mr. Frederick Eldred (Fred) Griffith in the 1950s, where present day Griffith Park is situated on the Yarra River at Eltham. Fred Griffith was also a Councillor (1945, 1951-1953) and former Shire President (1951) of the Shire of Eltham. Faye Walker (nee Harris) spent her first ten years living in the house. She recalls "there was a huge tin shed to the rear but toward the east of the house. I assume this is what people were thinking of when reference was made to the ‘’packing shed’. When I was small in the 50s, the shed was no longer being used for fruit packing but by the Griffith family as storage. Many of the pear trees remained but were no longer a commercial venture. We used to sneak up to the shed to read the National Geographic Magazines."griffith park, eltham, frederick eldred griffith, faye walker (nee harris) collection
