Panayotis Raftopoulos is standing outside his fish shop and café, the Leura Café in Camperdown. He was one of a number of Ithacans who moved into a regional area in that state and opened a retail food business. While a lot of the Ithacans who settled in Victoria established themselves in fruit retailing and/or cafes, some worked in fish wholesale and retail businesses and a number of them moved out into the regional towns in that state and opened shops and cafes in those towns. The Leura Cafe was one example of this. A black and white photograph of a man wearing a white apron stranding outside a fish and chip shop and cafe. -

Photograph - Higginson's Store, Wodonga
Higginson's menswear store was located in High Street Wodonga. Mr. Higginson first worked as a grocery boy at Farmer and Sons in Wodonga. He later moved to Rudines in Dean Street, Albury. He worked at this store, which sold clothing for both men and women for several years until he joined the army in 1942. After the war, he went back to school for a while, but then returned to Rudines. This was followed by 2 years at Stiff and Gannon's in Wodonga. He set about saving to have his own business, spending 5 years as manager at Trim's in Albury. Lionel Higginson met his future wife, Dulcie, at a social dance a few years after returning from the war at a social dance. They both worked in menswear and were engaged 6 months later and started building their dream. This included building their own business. The business, L. A. Higginson's Menswear opened on 10 October 1958 and around 12 months later added a women's clothing line, Dee Gals. This became so popular that in 1995 Dee Gals moved in to its own shop in the arcade. When Lionel passed away in 1999, his eldest daughter Pauline, who supported the business from the time she was 15, helped her mother progress the business. At this stage managing 2 stores was very demanding so Dee Gals was closed. In 2000, Dulcie's daughter Michelle Williams and husband Phil took over the business. Due to changing shopping approaches and demands of online shopping, the business closed on June 2023 after 65 years serving the community.A coloured image of Higginson's Menswear in Wodonga.Above Shop : L. Calendar, Harry Taylor 1962, 1961
This calendar was issued to customers of Harry Taylors Mens Shopin Warrnambool in 1962. Harry Taylor came to Warrnambool in 1932 and opened a menswear shop in Liebig Street. By 1962 Harry’s sons were running two shops at 132 and 136 Liebig Street. In the 1980s the shop at 132 Liebig Street was known as Taylors Colonial. Today this shop is still operated by members of the Taylor family under the name of Surfodesy. Members of the Taylor family been associated with men’s wear and sports wear shops in Warrnambool, for over 80 years and so any historical item connected with the shops is of some importance. It has been produced for Harry Taylor’s Men’s Shop in Warrnambool and features two photographs, one of Margaret Smith, the tennis player and one of the Duke of Edinburgh. Photograph, Churchill Street, Mont Albert and Mont Albert Station, looking towards Hamilton Street, 1919, 1919
The railway extended through to Mont Albert in 1882, but it wasn't until 1890 that a station was built with funds raised by a syndicate of local landowners. The buildings on the south side of the railway were built in 1910-1911 in the Arts and Crafts style by architect, K W Hardy. The land occupied by the Hamilton Street shops was subdivided in the 1880s and the first purpose-built shop was 'Pope and Moran, Grocers'. This shop later became Tom Morris' Grocery. By 1930 shops stretched along both sides of Hamilton Street and part way along Churchill Street. The donor, the late Norman Carter held a significant collection of photos taken around Mont Albert and Surrey Hills, in particular subjects related to the Church of England.Black and white photo taken from the centre of the road in Churchill Street, Mont Albert. Mont Albert station is on the RHS fenced off by a post and rail fence. Shops can be seen at the intersection of Hamilton and Churchill Streets. There do not appear to be any shops in Churchill Street. There are newly planted street trees within paling guards on the LHS. There does not appear to be any curb and channelling at the side of the road.Rear in blue biro in Jocelyn Hall's handwriting "Mont Albert Station 1919".mont albert station, railways, hamilton street, churchill street, shops, arts and crafts style, norman carter -
