A typed reprint of an article that appeared in The Herald. It is an account of the founding of Somers Camp by Lord Somers. The camp began in 1921 when the Duke of York started a summer camp for boys at Littlestone Aerodrome in England. It was an experiment in bringing together boys from different walks of life to encourage understanding and mutual appreciation of each other. While Lord Somers was Governor of Victoria he started a similar camp here with equal success. Part of the text: "Our aim is to change and improve the mental attitude of the boys to each other — to beget a state of mind in which the two sets merge in each other. As the period of the Camp is short — only one week — every effort is made to give the boys full scope for recreation and play. We do not wish to give them a busman's holiday and saddle them with numerous domestic duties, and so they are free of nearly all these, and can devote the whole of their time to themselves. We wish, too, to give them absolute freedom, with as little hampering discipline as possible, and so long as the simple rules of the Camp, such as punctuality at meals and so on are observed, they can do what they like. The Group Leaders take charge of the organised sports, and as each group is composed of boys from both school and workshop, unity is preserved. Superficial differences in worldly pros perity vanish at the Camp; you can't tell one from t'other; a feeling of comradeship in a common life manifests itself; a spirit of loyalty to each other, and to the ideals behind the camp quickly emerges; artificial barriers tumble down, and we are all one, That, in brief, is the spirit of the Camp. But, of course, that is not the beginning and end of it, for if it were, the benefit would be merely temporary, and the effects would pass off. And so I come to the other and, to my mind, the more important function of the movement which finds expression in what we call the Power House. The Power House is a continuation of the Camp. Every boy who attends the Camp becomes automatically a member of the Power House. The Camp is the Open Sesame to the Power House, and whereas in the Camp the boy has merely enjoyed himself, when he graduates to the Power House he begins to imbibe the spirit of service and to learn that he has responsibilities, both to himself and to others. This hat belonged to Mrs Moyra Rasmussen, who lived at 389 St Kilda Street, Brighton for over 50 years with her husband Rae Rasmussen, a bank manager with the State Bank of Victoria. The Mooney sisters, Nell and Ida, were situated beside the Regent Theatre in Collins Street, Melbourne and were well respected milliners and dressmakers. The hat's style is typical of the 1960s. This is the home of Ernest Lance Young and Beryl Mair and the childhood home of their children Barbara, Ken and Laurie. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitby. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. The Mair family were resident in Barton Street for several generations. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) implemented the conversion strategy from mainly brown coal supply to hydro - electricity. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. Clover Dam and Power Station were built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the late 1930's to the early 1940's. This dam was constructed to supply water to feed four turbines (62 mega watts) at the West Kiewa Power Station. This was at the forefront of sustainable "Green" energy. Costs associated with power supplies is still a major incentive of governments, however environmentally friendly alternatives such as wind and nuclear have also made inroads. The Kiewa valley and its surrounding alpine catchment were looked at(Victorian State Government), from the beginning of the twentieth century as a source of alternate power for an ever-increasing demand for electricity by growing population and heavy industrial areas within Melbourne City and State regions. Construction of dams, such as Clover Dam provided the large quantity holding areas of water required to turn the turbines at the various power stations to provide the electricity needed. The impact of these controls by moderating water run-off from the alpine regions is beneficial in reducing flooding from thawing of snow on the alps.
