The Western Victorian Games were launched as a part of the Australian Bicentenary celebrations in 1988. The inaugural games were programmed to run from the 9th - 11th December 1988 and become an annual event. The event however, never continued after 1988. The opening ceremony was conducted at Founders Hall BCAE, later Federation University.

Initially the Eltham War Memorial Trust had invited the Lieutenant Governor of Victoria, Lieut-General Sir Edmund Herring to perform the opening ceremony however he was not available. The opening of the restored Old Lower Plenty Bridge, opened on 14/03/2001 by the Minister for Environment and Conservation Sherryl Garbutt MLA and Mayor of Banyule Cr Dale Peters. The project was jointly funded by Banyule Council and Parks Victoria. The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) opened the seminary in 1934. These photographs were part of the advertising for the opening ceremony. The Jesuit Order had a presence on the site from 1934 to 1974 where a house of formation and studies for the Society of Jesus was located (the current Old Loyola building purchased by the College in 2002). A brown plastic laminate inscribed in white writing. On the reverse of the laminate is the previous attempt by the manufacturer, with the words 'June 1976 by the President of the Royal Blind Society of New South Wales, Sir Alexis Al' with an extra line next to the A. It has been taped over but is clearly visible through the masking tape, however this plate would have been attached to the wall, and the mistake not able to be seen by the public.
