Photographed by Alice 'Girlie' Adams, approx. 1942. Families living at Barkers Creek and Woodbrook obtained contracts to supply 'five foot wood' to Thompson's Foundry and Castlemaine Woollen Co. Rows of wood, neatly stacked, 10’ high X 5’ wide covered many acres at each factory, ready for use in firing the boilers. Much bushland was thus cleared for orchard or pasture. The horse depicted is fully harnessed with bridle, eye-winkers and reins, dray collar, hames, shaft saddle with girth & pole straps and breeching straps. Neatly stowed under the dray shafts can be seen the props, used to keep the dray horizontal when the horse was to be taken out of the shafts. The dray was almost entirely constructed of wood, with steel tyres on the wheelsA reminder of the significance of local sources of fuel to some of Victoria’s biggest manufacturing concerns as well as depicting a major source of employment involving minimal capital. A B&W photograph depicting 2 men and a boy with a horse-drawn dray filled with wood. Photograph taken by Alice 'Girlie' Adams in 1942. Ken Peeler, Ern Peeler and Don Peeler appear in the picture along with a horse with no known name. -

Most drays were open or had very low sides, allowing easy loading and unloading of heavy or bulky items. ...Most drays were open or had very low sides, allowing easy loading and unloading of heavy or bulky items. ...An Australian wooden dray is a type of heavy-duty, flat-bed cart or wagon historically used for transporting goods, often pulled by horses or bullocks. Drays were essential vehicles in rural and agricultural Australia from the 19th century into the early 20th century, especially before the widespread use of motorized transport. Construction: Drays were built from hardwoods like red gum or jarrah, known for their strength and durability. They had thick wooden axles, large, spoked wheels (often iron-rimmed), and a flat or slightly concave bed to hold loads like wool bales, timber, grain, or fencing materials. Most drays were open or had very low sides, allowing easy loading and unloading of heavy or bulky items. Two-Wheeled Design: Traditional drays usually had two large wheels, though four-wheeled wagons also existed. The two-wheeled version was more common for heavy loads in rough country. Bullock-Drawn or Horse-Drawn: In frontier and agricultural areas, drays were often pulled by teams of bullocks, especially for long hauls. Horses were used where terrain or speed demanded it. Drays were a backbone of colonial transport in Australia, especially before the railway networks expanded. They were critical during the gold rush era, the wool boom, and for pioneering settlements, where they moved supplies over long distances in often harsh conditions. Used by settlers, farmers, timber cutters, and teamsters (drivers of animal-drawn vehicles). farm equipment, transport, horse -

This was before World War II and the "growing up" of a colony to an independent member of "the British Commonwealth". It was a period when most appliances (be they household) where manufactured in England and shipped to Australian ports. It was not until the late 1960's that the Asian manufacturing giant woke up and started to dominate the market palce. This domestic kitchen appliance is very significant to the Kiewa Valley because it highlights the "made at home" period when food processing was made "in house" due to inability to source food from specialised shops e.g. the butcher or slaughter houses. It was a period before mass food processing factories were established and roads constructed up to the standard for distribution to semi remote regions such as Kiewa Valley was in the beginning of the 1900's.This cast iron (malleable iron) mincer for meat products has a large "funnel" to direct "chunks" of meat to the grinding "wheels". These "star" shaped wheels with "teeth" of three different cutting surfaces (fine, medium and coarse) provide for texture types of the final meat product. The meat is placed into the "loading" funnel and push downwards(gravity feed) through the mincing chamber and out through the front side. There is a long "screw worm" which is rotated by turning the handle. The appliance is table mounted by a vice "G" screw on clamp (hand operated).
