This certificate was awarded to Violet Murrell for a race sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in 1929. Violet Murrell (formerly Violet Farmer) was one of the best female riders in Victoria, who won many events for dressage, show jumping and straight-out gallops at country meetings. She protested loudly that she was not allowed to ride at city tracks against the male jockeys despite beating them at country meetings. When she married Bill Murrell, a well-known jockey, they came to live in Mentone. Violet Murrell died in a tragic fire at her home in 1934 while trying to save her favorite horse, Garryowen, and her husband, who had tried to help her, died a few days later.Horse race award certificate awarded to Violet Murrell, riding Garryowen. The certificate was awarded to William Walter Hughes Esq C.T.A. of Victoria by order of the Victorian Civil Ambulance Service Committee and certifies Mr Hughes election as Life Governor of the Victorian Civil Ambulance Service at a meeting of the Committee held on 27 July 1954.Buff coloured certificate in a blue frame. A Victorian Civil Ambulance Service logo is located in the centre top of the certificate. Signed by the President and the Secretary and dated 27 July 1954. Signatures have faded. Awarded to Lawrence Pearce Spelling. Laurie Spelling joined the ambulance service in the early 1970s and completed various training courses at the Ambulance Officer's Training Centre. He was employed by the Peninsula Ambulance Service and later qualified as a paramedic and was a MICA coordinator.
