Old Tick was the neighbour of Gus, Bess and Jack Gervasoni in Stanley St, Daylesford. As a toddler Jack Gervasoni would sit on his knee for hours watching his pocket watch - leading to the name 'Tick', and later 'Old Tick'. Annie Wheldon was Tick's daughter and gave many items currently on display at the Daylesford Museum.Black and white photograp of the photograph on the occassion of Gus Gervasoni being shipped out for compulsory service during World War two. The bell came from the ship Netherby, which was wrecked on King Island. The full story of the bell's journey from King Island is unclear, but assumption is that Roadknight family may have transferred it from their property in the Western District to Gippsland. This gear bag was issued to Sergent Harold Loraine Reed, who was born in 14 Aug 1889 in Portland, Victoria. Reed enlisted in the army in 1940 in Ballarat to serve in WWI, and was discharged from 8 Battalion in 1943. Gear bags such as this were standard issue to servicemen. Soldiers would fill their gear bags with essential equipment (mess tins, clothes, etc.) and carry them with them from post to post, or ship them to their destination ahead of time.Khaki coloured canvas bag that is cylindrical in shape with the owner's rank, name, and service number written on the front of the bag in white paint. The base of the bag is rounded, while the top is open with 11 eyelets (one missing) through which a cotton cord has been threaded. Each end of the cord has been wrapped with red tape.V58131 / S/Sgt. Medal - Pritchard World War Two group
The Atlantic Star was instituted in May 1945 to honour those who took part in the Battle of the Atlantic and was intended primarily for award to those who served in shipping convoys and their escorts and anti-submarine forces, as well as to those who served on fast merchant ships which sailed alone. The Battle of the Atlantic took place between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945, as German U-boats attacked convoys transporting vital supplies from America and the Colonies to Britain. Warships of the Royal Navy and aircraft of the Royal Air Force escorted these convoys, hunted the U-boats and, despite some notable successes by the U-boats, eventually won a comprehensive victory in the Atlantic. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. Uniform worn by Colonel J A Neale when serving as honorary colonel of 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles. John Neale served with the Royal Australian Navy during World War Two, having enlisted as 16-year-old. His service was on ships off northern Australia and in the South Pacific. Following the war, he enlisted as a trooper in 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles when the regiment was raised, serving in non-commissioned and commissioned ranks finally rising to command the regiment 1969-76. He served as Honorary Colonel 1986-92. Colonel Neale was instrumental in the formation of the Regimental Association and the establishment of the Regimental Museum. The link to Legacy is not known but there are many postcards are in the collection.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. This postcard also records Gallipoli for those who didn't have cameras. A postcard with a black and white image of small boats being towed on a rope through water. Each boat is carrying several soldiers, and other ships and boats can be seen in the background. From the title it is a landing party going ashore near Gaba Tepe, on the Gallipoli peninsula. The back of the post card is blank so it was kept more as a souvenir than sent as a letter. There are other similar postcards in the collection.Images of Gallipoli were captured on postcards as mementoes. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. Overview of Legacy’s involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme launched in 1980 by Ken Green Legatee. Includes a summary of aims, activities and organisation as compiled by the Outdoor Activities Committee. There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. Three photos of the Historic Tall Ship 'Alma Doepel' at a beach and being viewed by a large group of children and adults. Presumably this was an outing for Junior Legatees to see the tall ship. The date is not known but Legacy has had a long relationship with the ship. The 1993 article in The Answer explains the ship offers 9 day voyages to approx 30 young people (15 to 18 year olds) and Legacy has sponsored 90 Junior Legatees in the first 3 years of the programme. 'Alma Doepel" is owned by Sail and Adventure Ltd, a Not for Profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of youth through sail training. The Alma Doepel is a three masted topsail schooner, Australian built and operated, with more than a hundred years of history behind her. She is currently under restoration in Docklands, Melbourne. Photos came from an envelope marked P8 Junior Legatee photographs, including the text "Photograph Alma Doepel". There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. The MV Duntroon was a 10,346 ton passenger liner built for the Melbourne Steam Ship Co. by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson's yard, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 1935. One of the last purpose-built passenger & general cargo ships for the Australian coastal trade, the Duntroon was also known for its role as a troopship (1942-1949) and for the tragic incident on 20 November 1940 when she hit and sank the small auxiliary minesweeper HMAS Goorangai off Queenscliff with the loss of all 24 of Goorangai crew. In the early 1920s Australia was gifted six J class submarines from the Royal Navy. These were the latest and largest submarines built by the RN for service in World War I. They were competent but were in service with the Royal Navy for only a short time before the end of the war. Once in Australia they were placed into service but there was little appetite for submarines or in fact any other military endeavour in the early ‘twenties’. The world was exhausted from a long and dirty war followed by a devastating Influenza Epidemic.
