Photograph, George Coop, Balsa wood model airplane construction class, Nunawading High School, Canterbury Road, c.August 1983, 1983
Teachers at Nunawading High School were required to hold one afternoon a week with students undertaking some form of activity. There were various clubs such as gardening, chess, etc. Given George's background with art, craft and woodwork, he organised an activity for students to assemble balsa wood airplane kits which were test flown on the school grounds; Canternury Road in the background. Nunawading High School opened on Canterbury Road (near Mahoneys Road) in 1955. Enrolments grew rapidly and by 1969 there were over 1,100 students, making it one of the largest schools in the state. In 1989 it was merged with Burwood Heights High and Blackburn South High to become a junior campus of Forest Hills Secondary College. However, the junior campuses were closed in 1997, and the former Nunawading High was bulldozed to make way for a housing estate. Container - Tin, 1930-1955's
This metal tin once contained sewing silk thread, and was later used for storing 'B' hinges used in the making of the ship model, Sovereign of the Seas. Natural silk thread used in the model has elasticity and can also be teased out for making fine line for rigging on ship models. This object is one of the tools and accessories used by Jim Williams from about 1930-1955 to hand craft the ship model “HMS Sovereign of the Seas”. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. Please see our record 3732 of the mode Sovereign of the Seas for further details of the ship and the maker. This tailor’s silk container, and its later used as storage for hinges, was used in the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been carried as a leisure activity out for generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This tin was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Tin, round, with lid. Red label reads “The "A.B.C" Brand Tailors Sewing Silk (Raven) Color Fast. Dyed by a new process. Manufactured from the best raw silks procurable. Warranted. Made in England. Presented to Joyce Hucker for objects entered in the Australian Sheep Breeders' Association 1972 Show. Hucker began working with unspun wool and making dyes from the natural sources from her garden and the farm trees around her. From knitting and croceting articles, she progressed to felting and a 'wrapping' technique, always using unspun wool. She was a successful exhibitor at many craft shows and was always willing to pass on her experience and knowledge to others, often travelling widely to help groups requiring a demonstration.Presented to Joyce Hucker for objects entered in the Australian Sheep Breeders' Association 1972 Show.Australian Sheep Breeders' Assn, 1972 Show Late J Hucker 1972 1st Ribbonagricultural shows, hucker, mrs joyce -

Pamela Irving (born 1960) is a prominent Australian visual artist specialising in bronze, ceramic and mosaic sculptures as well as printmaking and copper etchings. Irving's early art was influenced by artists including Arthur Boyd, John Brack, Noel Connihan, Mirka Mora, Sidney Nolan and John Perceval. In recent years, Irving has been influenced ″by the honest and direct expressiveness of ‘outsider art’ (the art of self-taught or ‘naive artists’) and the craft of ‘memoryware’″ Significantly, this interest grew following Irving's visit to Nek Chand's Rock Garden in Chandigarh, India.Green Wedge Larry - dog sculpture reminiscent of the iconic Larry LaTrobe located at Melbourne City Square.
