Tennis ball with typed letter outlining the occasion of Scots Church Tennis Club opening in Ringwood in 1929 and background history of Hamlton family in South Warrandyte.Tennis ball inscription - Scots Church Tennis Club opened by Miss A. Russell, 28-9-1929. The accompanying letter mentions Miss Russell was Secretary of Ringwood Presbyterian Church Ladies Guild around that time, and that Trevor Hamilton took on the post of Head Teacher at South Warrandyte State School in 1925, and later taught at Ringwood and Ringwood North State Schools.

This trowel was presented to John Russell, director of Orbost Butter Factory for fiftyyears and Chairman for nine years. John Russell was an early Orbost blacksmith in Orbost, and director of the Orbost Butter Factory for 50 years. He came to Orbost in c. 1890 at the invitation of another early settler, James Nixon, became a blacksmith, and later a farmer and landholder. Many of his descendants still live in the Orbost area.This item is significant because of its association with the Orbost Butter Factory as well as the connection with the Russell family, Orbost pioneers.A silver (plated?) trowel ornately decorated with engravings. The imposing white marble statue of William Wallace by Percival Ball stands approximately 8 feet tall with helmet and sward. The statue is mounted on a granite base with a marble plaque inscribed in praise of William Wallace, the Scottish warrior famous for leading the defeat of English forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. The artwork is located in the Botanic Gardens in Ballarat, Victoria and can be seen upon entry from the main gates. Sculpted by Percival Ball of Melbourne and unveiled in 1889, the statue was funded by a £3000 bequest to the gardens by James Russell Thomson, a Scottish miner who made his fortune during the Victorian gold rush. It was intended as a tribute to Thomson’s Scottish origins.
