After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. The society was instrumental in promoting the art of the bookplate through establishment of the Australian Bookplate Design competition. Nell Davidson was a staunch member of the Salvation Army and was born in Warrcowie, South Australia, in 1885. She was one of the first four 'police women' when she joined Victoria Police as an agent on 3 June 1918. She was described as being 5' 6" tall, weighed 8 stone 7lb, with brown hair and eyes and a dark complexion. She retired on 25 December 1940, having achieved the rank of First Constable in 1934.
