Photograph - 'Ellesmere', Princess Street [Kew], c.1950
A National Trust (Vic) citation records that Ellesmore [sic] was: 'A late Victorian Villa in the grand manner but completed to a meaner standard in the Edwardian Period. Notable for the mannerist porticos surmounted by a sepulchre motif: the central vestibule at the intersection of the two major axes, with lantern lighting from above: and the art nouveau woodwork of the drawing room'.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. Various PartiesReference, Research, InformationArranged by Secondary Values (value of records to users)The Terrace House at 14-16 Princess Street in Kew, is a historical building that came under threat of acquisition and demolition by the City of Kew during the 1970s. Public opinion strongly favoured the terraces instead of the proposed car park spaces, and publishing in Melbourne’s ‘The Age’ helped to create a compromise. By 1979, the building was confirmed to instead be renovated into office buildings, and now exists as a doctor’s office. The file includes: Letters between the multiple organisations and Jill O’Brien, a notice of sale for the property, plans for the office renovation, and newspaper articles regarding the property.14-16 princess street – kew (vic.), houses – kew (vic.)14-16 princess street – kew (vic.), houses – kew (vic.) -

Photograph, House, cnr Fellows & Princess Streets, circa 1965, c. 1965
17 Fellows Street Kew was originally owned and occupied by the architect Henry Kemp. Kemp had arrived in Australia in 1886 and this was therefore one of the first of the many buildings he was to design in Melbourne. While late Victorian in date, the house is an interesting precursor of the Edwardian architecture produced by Kemp. Somewhat awkwardly composed with steep gables, a rectangular castellated tower and slated single storeyed verandahs projecting from the overall box-like form, the house contains features common to the 1880s such as the use of polychromy in the brickwork and slates cladding the roof. (Sanderson 1988). The historian Dorothy Rogers established that at one stage it was the home of Dr John Dale - Chief Medical Officer of the City of Melbourne. This photograph predates later renovations to the rear of the property. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015.
