It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire. A fleet of transport ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the purpose of transporting various AIF formations to their respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were used for other duties. HMAT A54e Runic was one of these ships.The HMAT Runic weighed 12,480 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd. Liverpool. The HMAT Runic was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 27 November 1917. David Conolly was lay reader at the Mission in 1956-57. He's photographed here with Harry Sanderson, self (D.Conolly), "Nobby Clark", Alec Grice and "Ms" Kirkland. According to a list of his ships' visits he maintained the Neleus was in port in August 1957.
