Photograph - Image, Michael Laurie Photography, National Information Library Service 2003 Annual Report digital images, 2003
Various images taken of library processes and staff, for the NILS Annual Report. These include: - the Circulation area, where items were returned via post and stacked on trolleys. Cassette books were checked for completeness (as a book could require multiple cassette containers or having missing cassettes) and if they had been rewound, before returning. The computer system either re-circulated the book out to another borrower or put to storage in the Hanging Carousel, which was 1 storey high and housed 1000's of books. Books being sent out again were issued a card with the address label printed on it, and were required to be placed in the address rack on the book, before being shipped out via post. - Computer Access Centre was located in the Browsing Library and consisted of two computers, one with a larger screen for increased font size and a trackball mouse designed for people with limited mobility. - Duplication where blank cassettes are loaded into 'slaves' and a master recording duplicated on to multiple tapes - Browsing Library where a small selection of Braille, audio and large print books are kept and can be viewed. - Braille and Large Print Production, where text is scanned then transformed into the desired format, before proofing and dispatch to the client. - Audio Production studios where text is recorded by single or multiple narrators, and produced. 298 images of NILS staff, clients and volunteersnational information library service, john turner, carl sayo, tim mitchell, marnie rose-smith, ted johnson, craig carey, jamie kelly, alan egerton, alan bates, bernadette jolley, debbie cooke, kelly thong, robert de graauw, karl hughes, justin bates, jean watson -

Audio - Sound recording, Letter to clients regarding the Vision Australia Awards, 2005
... of the Year was awarded, then followed by the Audio Book of the Year ...The Braille Book of the Year awards were first established by the Braille and Talking Book Library in 1974, as a way of recognising excellence in Braille production. In 1990 the first Narrator of the Year was awarded, then followed by the Audio Book of the Year in 1991. With the merger with the AFB, then the name change to Vision Australia Foundation, these awards were rechristened the Vision Australia Foundation awards. In 2005, another merger took place and the decision was made to only continue the original award, due to both limited funds and the development of the commercial audio book industry and thus commercial audio awards. This letter was sent to members to advise of the changes and the reasons behind it.1 CD with 1 sound filevision australia, awards -

Audio - Sound recording, ABC Hindsight: Hearing the Blind, 13 December 2001
... Hindsight: Hearing the Blind Audio Sound recording ...ABC Radio show 'Hindsight" which looks at the historical, and not so historical, limitations that were placed on blind and vision impaired people through the twentieth century. Through interviews with various people who lost or were born with limited or no sight as well as historian Judith Buckrich, the changes over the last 150 years about the politics of the blind and the thinking around it are reflected upon. From the first institute for the blind set up in Victoria in 1866, there have been restrictions on conditions, access of service, working life, education, travel, voting rights, attitudes on using white canes or dog guides, pensions, workers rights, and socialising between blind men and women. The impact of Helen Keller's visit in 1948 resulted in some changes, however many other groups such as the Blind Workers Union, and individuals like Tilly Aston, worked to put blind people in charge of their lives and in the institutions that affected them. 1 sound file of radio show interviewroyal victorian institute for the blind, judith buckrich, dorothy hamilton, barry palmer, anna fairclough, alice mcclelland, harry worland, megan denyer, david blyth, john murphy, major general paul cullen, roy hallett, martin stewart, nick gleeson, jennifer bowen, abc radio -
