'Willie & Wilma' two hand knitted toy bears, made for sale during the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. The inspiration for these toys was the mascot for the Games - "Matilda" - a 13 meter tall mechanical kangaroo. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill was officially opened on November 14th, 1910. The first manager was John E. Bennett. Goods made were " blankets, flannels, articles of universal use". In 1958 the Mill became the first to manufacture electric blankets in Australia. In 2000 the Mill closed after 90 years of operation. This label is of much importance as the Warrnambool Woollen Mill was a major manufacturing business in Warrnambool for 90 years.White label with blue printing adhered to grey cardboard. William Todd is understood to have been born about 1855 at Linton's Diggings to parents William (Snr) and Sarah, née Thompson. William Todd married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bennett in 1882. After the death of his father-in-law William Garnsworthy Bennett in 1903, members of the Todd family took over the butcher's shop on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets in Linton, but it is not known if William Todd had a direct interest in the shop, as his occupation in electoral rolls form 1903 onwards is stated as "carpenter". He was Secretary of the Linton Horticultural Society for many years, bandmaster of the Linton Brass Band, and was an active member of the Linton Church of England congregation. William and Elizabeth Todd celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1932. They had nine children. Elizabeth Bennett (b. 1858), married William Todd (b. 1855) in 1882 and they had nine children. They were actively involved in the Linton community, particularly with the Church of England, where Mrs. Todd was organist for many years. North Western Woollen Mills Work Room with machinery, Stawell Victoria. Initially there were moves to start the woollen mill in1919. Eventually opening in 1923 but closed in 1925 as unsuccessful. Mr. J. Stanley Bruce was an Australian politician and diplomat, who served as Prime Minister between 1923 and 1929, when he became the first Prime Minister to lose his seat at an election. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in South Warrnambool was opened in 1910 with John Bennett the first manager. It produced woollen blankets and rugs and woollen products during the war years for military purposes. It closed in 2000.These cards are of interest as an advertising tool for the Warrnambool Woollen Mill which was a major industry in Warrnambool for 90 years.
