The Corona Paint Company Pty. Ltd. Bendigo was formed in November 1920 with £10,000 capital, in £1 shares. By July 1921, the Company had completed its factory and plant at Bendigo East, ready to begin the manufacture of paints. The Corona Paint works were opened on Saturday 28 January by the Prime Minister (Mr. Hughes) during a visit to Bendigo. Many new manufacturing industries were opened during this time after calls to address the decline of mining in the region. The factory of the CORONA PAINT COMPANY, BENDIGO, was advertised for sale in The Argus on 5 October 1923. It consisted of a “building on a railway siding, plant and machinery, including dry grinding plant, kalsomine mixer, paint mill, furnace, electric motor, etc., large stores of raw and finished material, kalsomine with range of 21 colours, oil paints, &c.”A cast iron embossing press. It's painted black with gold coulered floral decorations. The base is 18 centimetres long, nine centimetres wide and one and a half centimetres thick. A curved protrusion rises from the base that is eight centimetres by four centimetres which narrows to four centimetres by two and a half centimetres with a three-quarter centimetre wide slot. Inside the slot is a lever action with a ten centimetre by two and a half centimetre wooden handle. There is a removeable die on the end of the lever and an opposite removeable die the base. This hat was part of a RAAF uniform and likely dates to the Second World War due to the style of crown. Hats such as these are often misshapen at the crown due to the use of earmuff-style headphones worn by aircrew during the Second World. Navy peaked cap in cotton with beige topstitching along crown. When a fire or smoke was spotted from the tower a bearing was taken with the alidade and radioed or telephoned into the district office. It was then cross referenced with bearings from other towers on a large wall map to give a "fix" on the fire location. Alidades and telescopes were used in the post war period but were replaced with a much simpler map table and reference string suspended from the centre of the tower cabin. This "Fire Finder" was used in Canadian fire towers to identify the location of wildfires. The unique design was first developed by the British Columbia Forest Service (BCFS) in the early 1950s. Close examination of the map indicates that this particular Fire Finder may have been once used at Bluejoint Mountain lookout in Granby Provincial Park. This Fire Finder was a gift to Barry (Rocky) Marsden from the British Columbia Forest Service in the late 1980s in recognition of the close relationships that had been forged with the staff at the Altona Workshops over many decades. Fire Finders were originally painted black but this one was repainted green after it arrived at Altona. The BC Forest Service had a large facility where they manufactured Fire Finders and many other items of equipment, but in the 1980s it was shut down. Heavy cast iron circular object with a paper topographic map mounted on it. The metal dial and ruler works similar to a compass. The sight tube is used to determine the bearing and elevation of the fire on the map. This Fire Finder also sometimes known as an Alidade. Isobel Antoinette McDonagh (her first name also spelled Isabel, Isabell, Isabella) was born in Jamaica in 1847, a daughter of Robert & Antoinette McDonagh. In 1851, in Ireland, Isobel and her sister Jane were orphaned after both their parents died within a few months of each other. In 1855 Isobel and her sister came to Australia with their uncle John McDonagh and his wife Martha (née Mathews). Following the death in childbirth of her sister Jane in 1878, Isobel married her brother-in-law Frederick William Mitchell in 1881. She was the mother of Frederick William Mitchell, Robert Harold Mitchell, Albert Earnest Mitchell, Ida Olive Mitchell and Lillian (or Lily) Isabell Mitchell.Painted/modified black and white photograph which has been printed on glass, depicts a young lady with hair drawn back from face and worn in a bun or chignon at the back, wearing a dark coloured dress with a high neck and some trimming on bodice and sleeves. This photographic equipment was manufactured by Eastman Kodak for amateur photographers. It enabled them to develop their films in a simple and effective manner. This box and contents have no known local provenance but are retained as an example of early photographic equipment. The items will be useful for display. This is a Kodak film tank development box and contents. The box is rectangular and wooden with a light brown polished surface. The sides of the box rest on a base that is slightly larger than the box sides. The lid is a separate piece and slots into ridges on the inside of the top of the box. Under the lid is a printed set of instructions on paper. Inside, the box is painted black and on one side it has an affixed metal piece for the attachment of the film spool. A removable solid cylindrical silver metal drum is inside the box. This has an outer covering of corrugated cardboard. There are three unattached pieces inside the box– two silver metal rods with handles and one silver metal rod with two larger end pieces. This rescue line-throwing rocket set was made for the Dennett rocket system, which was used by the Rocket Rescue crews in South West Victoria from around the 1860s to the 1890s. John Dennett - John Dennett was from Carisbrooke, in the Ilse of Wight, UK. In 1826 he invented, patented and demonstrated an improved method of rocket powered, line firing rescue equipment for saving lives. The rockets had a longer range than the mortars being used, they were lighter, needed less preparation time, only needed one line for repeated shots, and fewer people were needed to move the equipment. Very favourable reports of Dennett’s rockets were received by those in charge of His Majesty’s Naval and Military services. In 1832, Dennett’s rocket-thrown line was sent out to the wreck of the ‘Bainbridge’, and was responsible for nineteen survivors coming ashore in two boatloads, along the fired line. Dennett’s rocket received national fame, and a one-year contract to supply rockets to the Coastguards. He became known as ‘Rocket Man’ and his rockets were used in rescues at least until 1890, when his son Horatio was running the business. A rocket weighing 23 lb would have a range of about 250 yards (228 metres), on average. Saving lives in Warrnambool – The coastline of South West Victoria has had over 600 shipwrecks and many lost lives; even in Warrnambool’s Lady Bay there were around 16 known shipwrecks between 1850 and 1905, with eight lives lost. In 1859 the first Government-built lifeboat arrived at Warrnambool Harbour and a shed was soon built to house it, followed in 1864 by a rocket house to safely store the Rocket Rescue equipment. In 1878 the buildings were moved to the Breakwater area, and in 1910 the new Lifeboat Warrnambool arrived with its ‘self-righting’ design. For almost one hundred years the lifeboat and rocket crews, mostly local volunteers, trained regularly to maintain and improve their skills, summoned when needed by alarms, gunshots, ringing bells and foghorns. Some became local heroes but all served an important role. By the end of the 1950s the lifeboat and rescue equipment had become obsolete. Rocket Rescue Method - The first use of a lifesaving rocket rescue system is often credited to Captain Manby and his invention of a life mortar, first used in 1808 to fire a line onto a ship to rescue lives. Henry Trengrouse’s invention of 1820 was the first to use a sky rocket’s power to throw a line, and his invention included a chair for carrying the shipwrecked victims to shore. In 1832 John Dennett invented a rocket specifically for shore to ship rescue. It had an iron case and an 8 foot pole attached and could shoot the line as far as 250 yards (about 230 metres). From the 1860s the rocket rescue apparatus was in use. It comprised a breeches buoy and traveller block that was suspended on a line and manually pulled to and from the distressed vessel carrying passengers and items. Colonel Boxer, who had invented an early line-thrower, designed a rocket in 1865 with a range from 300 to 470 yards. It was the first two-stage rocket, with two rockets placed one in front of the other in a tube that carried the rescue line. The hemp line was faked, or coiled, in a particular way in a faking box to prevent twists and tangles when fired, and the angle of firing the rocket was measured by a quadrant-type instrument on the side of the rocket machine. Schermuly invented the line-throwing pistol around 1920, which used a small cartridge to fire the rocket. Victoria’s Government adopted lifesaving methods based on Her Majesty’s Coast Guard in Great Britain, which used Colonel Boxer’s rocket apparatus rescue method. The British Board of Trade published instructions in 1850 for both the beach rescue crew and ship’s crew. It involved setting up the rocket launcher on shore at a particular angle measured by the quadrant, inserting a rocket that had a light-weight line attached, then firing it across the stranded vessel. A tally board was then sent out with instructions in four languages. The ship’s crew would haul on the line to bring out the continuous whip line and attach the whip block to a mast or sturdy part the ship. The rescue crew on shore then hauled out a heavier hawser line, which the ship’s crew fixed above the whip block. The hawser is then tightened using the block on the shore end of the whip. The breeches buoy and endless whip are then attached to the traveller block on the hawser, allowing the shore crew to haul the buoy to and from the vessel, rescuing the stranded crew one at a time. The rocket system could also be used from one ship to another.The Dennett rocket set is quite rare - there are not many examples in existence and little information is available. This Dennett's rocket set is significant for its connection with local history, maritime history and marine technology. Lifesaving has been an important part of the services performed from Warrnambool's very early days, supported by State and Local Government, and based on the methods and experience of Great Britain. Hundreds of shipwrecks along the coast are evidence of the rough weather and rugged coastline. Ordinary citizens, the Harbour employees, and the volunteer boat and rescue crew, saved lives in adverse circumstances. Some were recognised as heroes, others went unrecognised. In Lady Bay, Warrnambool, there were around 16 known shipwrecks between 1850 and 1905. Many lives were saved but tragically, eight lives were lost.A Dennett rocket set in six parts; the rocket head, three shafts (poles) and two rocket-head toting boxes. The rocket head, mounted on one of the shafts, is a long, red painted, iron tube with rounded ends and a protruding fitting around each end. The wooden rocket shafts are octagonal, with a metal sheath at the ends, carved elongated slots towards each end, and a scribed channel above the black foot. The rocket head toting boxes are thick timber, covered in fabric and painted black. They have a hinged wooden lid that slants downwards from back to front, and a metal closure. Small deliberate holes, in groups of four, on the box’s sides, indicate missing attachments, likely to have been handles. HMAS BENDIGO (J187) was an Australian made "Corvette" which served throughout WW2 until 'paid off' on 27 September 1946. The Bendigo Military Museum also holds the last ensign of HMAS BENDIGO, it has a large number of auto graphs. We also hold the wooden crest and Battle Honours Board, this is on loan for 5 years. Refer to Cat 4546 Ensign.1. This is a medium size ships bell. It is cast from Brass. It has a protrusion on the top with a hole in it, used for mounting. The words HMAS BENDIGO 1941 are engraved into the side and painted black. The exterior surface has a few pits, but has been polished numerous times. The interior surface is rough cast, with a large quantity of dints, where it has been struck by the clapper. 2. This is the clapper. There is a steel hook under which is a weight of steel. Under that is a ring. Suspended from the bottom ring is the rope handle. This is an excellent example of navy rope work. At the top of it is a metal ring. Under that is a white and red stylised crown. Under the 'headband' of the crown is a white rope handle with blue inserts. Demonstrates how the SEC used signage to communicate important information to staff.An enameled metal plate sign in an off-white colour, hand painted with black lettering. The sign reads "AIR BRAKE OPERATING END". The sign is curved, and all four corners have been angled. There is a hole in each of the corners to enable attachment to the tram cab. Horizontal lines have been drawn to ensure the even height and spacing of the lettering. The back of the sign has been painted a brass colour, although some of this has flaked off with wear. Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "St Kilda Football Ground" Black letters on a yellow background. The bottom right hand corner of the St Kilda has the letters "G.H." indicating the depot that it belonged to - East Preston. The reverse side has been painted in black and a "Shop early" for Christmas sing has been pasted onto it. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Two (2) No. or one set of - Pressed metal plates with corners trimmed, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a yellow background and the letter "M" and numbers "31" painted in black, to give a Run Number Plate for Malvern Depot No. 31. Painted with the same detail on either side of the plate. Used by Malvern Depot until they were phased out and replaced with the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system c1990. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Piano Box Buggy replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880 and early 1900's. A model of a red and black Piano Box Buggy c.1860 which was a lightweight two wheeled one passenger open horse drawn carriage with a black canopy roof where the driver sat behind. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with black rims, brown painted seating, two gold coach lamps and a black patterned footrest in front of the driver. The canopy has thin gold struts to open and close it depending on the weather. There are two long brown wooden shafts on each side to surround the horse. It has a model of a biscuit coloured horse with a white tail and mane with the necessary horse tack for carriage use to help the driver communicate with the horse. It was also known as the 'Bonner Buggy' and had many variations. Coach builders designed and made their own style, giving it their own name. Run number plates used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Item was pushed into a slot of a reader which then recognised the identification through the series of holes on the left hand side. Fitted with metal strips, riveted on, to enable the card to be slotted into the holder by the crew member and then withdrawn when not required. Understood that the tram carried one of these at one end and then another without the holes at the other end. Number has been engraved into the plastic sheet and then painted in black. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews. "The Alfred Hospital was founded in 1869 as a result of the work of a number of Melbourne doctors who fought a long and internecine battle for an additional general hospital treating its first patient in 1871. Prahran Council donated a parcel of low lying land for the provision of a Hospital. In 1870, the Melbourne architect, Charles Webb, won the competition to design The Alfred Hospital with his revolutionary design. Webb incorporated the "Nightingale" design principles by designing large light filled pavilions as wards connected by covered corridors or walkways." Print depicts a series of five red brick buildings at centre, with a dirt road snaking up from the left foreground to the front of the central building. A man is driving a two horse buggy along the dirt road towards the buildings. The landscape on either side of the road consists of grassland and low vegetation, as well as four shallow circular pits (two on either side) which contain vegetation. There are two figures in the right foreground cutting grass with scythes. A flock of birds is visible in the sky in the central background, above the main hospital building.
