This is a photograph of An Orbost Agricultural Show Committe. The first meeting to form an Agricultural society in Orbost was convened by the then Orbost Progress Association and held in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday, 10th October 1891. Its first show was held on 3rd March 1904...on a site alongside the Bonang Road where the present Golf Club stands. It is currently held at the Recreation Reserve at Newmerella. (Ref: In Times Gone By-Deborah Hall) This photographs is associated with the Orbost Agricultural Society 's Annual Show which has been a major event in Orbost for over a century. Agricultural shows are an important part of cultural life in small country towns and the Orbost Show is an integral part of Orbost 's agricultural history. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. Colour Photo Stawell Shire Hall built 1866, c1980. The Shire Hall is in Longfield Street Stawell and has had many changes since 1866. Ronald Campbell, the Shire's second president laid the foundation of the hall on 28th April 1866. The contractors were Hutchings and Delbridge. The first Hall and office were the front part of the existing building. These rooms consisted of two 18 ft square rooms with an entrance hall separating them. The facade was almost the same as it is today. The building cost 502 pounds.Colour photograph of Stawell Shire Hall 1866. The photo is of the coach house at 'St. Abbs', 33 York Street. John Inglis Lothian, publisher, bought St Abbs in 1903 and lived here with his family until 1908. Prior to this the property had been part of Isiah Ainger's farm. The San Miguel family lived there from 1911-1923 and in 1926 Thomas Lothian bought 'St Abbs' and his family lived there until 1974. As the donor was Miss Jean Lothian it is assumed that the photo was taken during one of the periods the Lothian family occupied the property and more likely during the earlier period.
