Bank Books (2), 1930s
These items, 1930s bank books belonging to Michael Toohey, a Woodford farmer, come from the estates of the Ardlie family of Warrnambool and appear to have been stored amongst the office material of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie (1843-1933). He was the son of pioneer Warrnambool settlers, John and Mary Ardlie. William Ardlie established a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1867, initially in partnership with George Barber. Ardlie was a dominant figure in legal and community circles in Warrnambool and continued with his legal practice until the early 1930s. The bank books were issued by the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. A Warrnambool branch of this bank was established in 1927 when it acquired the Bank of Victoria. The Warrnambool branch of the Bank of Victoria at 92 Liebig Street then became the Commercial Bank of Sydney. In 1958 the bank building was demolished and new premises were built. In 1981 the Commercial Bank of Sydney merged with the National Bank of Australia and traded as the National Bank in the building at 92 Liebig Street until the premises were closed in 1985.These items are of minor interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool branch of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney..1 A bank book with a hard black cover and pages containing ruled black lines. The cover has a white label pasted on. This has black printing and handwriting. The pages contain handwritten debit and credit entries. .2 A bank book with a soft black cover and a white label pasted on. This label has black printing and handwriting. Ledger, Mortgagee
This ledger appears to have been a mortgage document held by the law firm of Mackay Taylor and Co. with the evidence for this the presence of two loose sheets of paper in the ledger with that firm’s letterhead. Mackay Taylor was established in 1893 with the merger of the firms of George Sutherland Mackay and James Fletcher, independent practising lawyers at the time. The new firm became Fletcher and Mackay and later changed to Mackay and Taylor when J. McD. Taylor became a partner in the 1920s and the business was at 131 Kepler Street, with a new building erected in the late 1920s. The legal business closed in the 1990s with the mortgage section of the firm becoming Mackay Taylor Securities in 1990 (later Southern Securities). The ledger was recovered when the building was being cleared out and Percy Eccles, a real estate agent, handed it to the Warrnambool and District Historical SocietyThis ledger has considerable significance as an example of a law firm’s business activities in the mid 20th century. It also contains personal details of loans made to Warrnambool and district people and could be useful for research, with limited and supervised access to researchers because of the sensitive nature of the material contained therein.Ledger with leather covers and straps and metal sides; black covers are very worn leather alphabet tabs; handwritten entries for mortgagees and mortgagors and vendors and purchasers, 1938-1962; 3 loose sheetsKalamazoo Loose Leaf Books, 10/1/1938warrnambool, george sutherland mackay -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Book, Basil Lubbock, The Colonial Clippers, 1948
From the Preface: "In this book I have attempted to give some account of the beautiful sailing ships which played so great a part in the development of the great British Dominions under the Southern Cross. It is written specially for the officers and seamen of our Mercantile Marine, and I have endeavoured to avoid such a criticism as the following:—“Heaps about other ships, but my old barkey was one of the fastest and best known of them all and he dismisses her with a line or two.” I have made rather a point of giving passage records, as they are an everlasting theme of interest when seamen get together and yarn about old ships. The memory is notoriously unreliable where sailing records are concerned, so I have been most careful to check these from logbooks and Captains’ reports. Even Lloyd’s I have found to be out by a day or two on occasions. A great deal of my material has been gathered bit by bit through the past 25 or 30 years. Alas! many of the old timers, who so kindly lent me abstract logs and wrote me interesting letters, have now passed away. The illustrations, I hope, will be appreciated, for these, viii whether they are old lithographs or more modern photographs, are more and more difficult to unearth, and a time will soon come when they will be unprocurable. Indeed, if there is any value in this book it is because it records and illustrates a period in our sea history, the memory of which is already fast fading into the misty realms of the past. To preserve this memory, before it becomes impossible, is one of the main objects, if not the main object, of my work."430 pp. on art paper. approx 60 illustrations, photos, sketches, all B&W. booklet, 1958 Road Safety Colouring Competition, second half 1950's
Between the 1950s and 1970s, road safety was redefined as a medical and social problem, rather than a moral and legal one. This was a time before seat belts. The Road Safety Colouring Competition was a free colouring competition for children, organised by Commonwealth Oil Refineries Ltd., started in August 1954 with the , aims of teaching road safety. There were 1,000 prizes, valued at £1,200. The winner would receive a £100 bursary and a free plane trip with one parent to Canberra to receive the prize from the Federal Minister for Transport, Senator.G. McLeay. This booklet is the one used by the children in Orbost in 1958. This booklet was designed to promote road safety awareness, with messages and activities specifically considered for children. Its aim was to teach road safety in a fun, but educational way. This item was an important educational tool. A booklet of competitions - Road Safety- Victorian Section for Children It was issued by the Australian Road Safety Council. The front cover is blue, red, black and white.
