The two set squares belonged to the donor's father. Purchased in Melbourne in 1912. He was an engineer with John's Waygood, Otis and Skinner, lift engineers. The monument commemorates those from Avoca who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was dedicated on18 November 1921. The memorial was later rededicated in 1988 to also remember those who served in the Second World War. During the First World War, 137 men from the Avoca area volunteered for the armed services and of this number 29 were killed. A plaque, unveiled in 1984, commemorates Sergeant Lewis McGee V.C who enlisted from Avoca in World War One. Colour photograph of the Avoca World War One. Winlaton was established in Springvale Rd., Nunawading in 1956 as the main state-run institution for adolescent girls. Previously (1951-1953) Winlaton was a home run by the Mission of St James and St John for women with venereal diseases. Re-opened in 1956, female offenders were committed to Winlaton by the courts, but there were also many girls and young women in danger who had not committed a crime. Winlaton closed in 1993 and the land is now occupied by the Candlebark Estate.5 black and white photographs (a-e) showing tattoos being removed at the Winlaton Youth Training Centre. The gate in these photos is the only remaining on e of 17 towers that were placed strategically on the town walls. It was called the Buttergate and located near to St John's Gate which levied a toll on the butter entering the town, the levy being used to support the Carmelite Monastery, founded in 1256 in what is now Mary Street, Drogheda.
