Installed on building at 528 Whitehorse Road, Mitcham between 1938 and 1944. Building was a Newsagency and Post Office.Patrick and Bertha Markham operated the newsagency and post office on this site from 1925 to 1944. In the late 30s a range of photographic and developing services and supplies were added to the business. The sign was installed under the veranda on the Whitehorse Road frontage to advertise Kodak services. Also, their daughter Mary was a keen photographer and started a business as a child photographer. In 1944, both her parents died and Mary inherited the premises and continued the Kodak agency as part of her business. Mary and her husband, Harold, sold the former Mitcham post office to the PMG in mid 1957 and removed the Kodak sign as they departed.Metal sign L 1220cm x H 295cm . (See also NP262 ) Black and white photo of Mitcham Post Office, NE corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street. Has been site of Mitcham PO for many years - built in 1924. Following the death of Bertha Markham, Postmistress, in 1944, the building was not a PO; it resumed that function in mid 1957: between 1944 and 1957, the post office location was on the same block several buildings to the east of the current site. This building was also the home of Mary Millane (daughter of Bertha Markham) who operated a mixed business here and her husband Harold conducted a studio photographic business from these premises. The Millane family sold the premises to the PMG and vacated the premises in June, 1957, at which time it resumed service as the Mitcham Post Office.mitcham post office

O'Callaghan's hotel was one of three 'hotels' which operated in Mitcham in the late 19th century. Suited on the corner of Station St and Whitehorse Road it was run by Irish widow, Mary Jane O'Callaghan. This image was one of a series taken by Harold Millane in the late 1940's. They were printed onto post cards. Mary Millane, Harold's wife, printed captions on each negative with Indian ink. The series includes a variety of views of Mitcham, Vermont, Nunawading, Park Orchards and Doncaster East. Margaret Ellen Holloway married William Hugh Hooke in 1892. Margaret is the daughter of James Charles Holloway and Mary Bennett. She was born in 1864 in Indigo,via Rutherglen at the gold lead. Her father James came out from Somerset England with a large family group to settle in the North East of Victoria and to try their fortune at gold mining. The Holloway’s and their descendants then went on to farm in the district including Rutherglen, Chiltern, Springhurst, Barnawartha and Browns Plains. This is Ida Mary Hooke and her younger sister Violet Hooke. Ida was 9 years older than Violet, who was the youngest of the Hooke family. They are Holloway descendants. Original photograph loaned by Sister de Sales of Presentation Sisters in 1988, together with a typed up history of the Sisters in Rutherglen. Father Lawless (later Monsignor) was Priest at St Mary's Rutherglen from 1923 until his death in September 1958. He is buried in Carlyle Cemetery. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Farnell Mardling is believed to have been a Councillor and Mayor of Rutherglen Borough, and was on the committee that was responsible for the building of the Common School in 1872.
