This banknote plate was created for the Sydney branch of the Bank of Australasia in February 1900, before the Federation of Australia. After printing the banknotes from this plate the printer would have overprinted the banknotes with a unique serial number and the denomination of the banknote in capital letters using a contrasting ink. The Bank of Australasia was incorporated by Royal Charter of England in March 1834. It first came to Australia on 14th December 1835, opening in Sydney. In that year, the Acting Superintendent of the Bank of Australasia in Sydney was David Charters McArthur. He went on to become the Superintendent from 1867-to 1876. The Melbourne branch of the Bank of Australasia opened on 28th August 1838. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970 the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. BANK of AUSTRALASIA, WARRNAMBOOL – The Bank of Australasia was the first bank in Warrnambool. It was established in 1854 and operated from leased buildings on Merri Street and then Timor Street. The bank opened its own building on May 21, 1860, on the northeast corner of Timor and Kepler Streets. Mr A Butt was the Manager of the Warrnambool Branch in 1895. This significant item of early Australian social history gives a snapshot into the founding and early development of the banking system in Australia. The plate has historical significance as it belonged to the Bank of Australasia which was established in 1834 by Royal Charter and opened in Sydney, Australia, in Sydney in 1835. The plate is significant for its association with the Bank of Australasia, which had a branch in Warrnambool. Warrnambool's branch was the first bank in Warrnambool, established in 1854. The bank continued to operate until its merger in 1951 when it became the ANZ Bank, which is still in operation today. William Thomas George was born in Birmingham in 1884 and was a tin plate worker. He and his wife Ellene had a son Leslie Thomas George. The firm W T George & Co was formed sometime later. In 1939 his firm produced ship lamps. The Patent Number GB546575 on the lamp's plate was assigned to Leslie Thomas George in 1941 for improvements in, or relating to, ships' lanterns. From that time the patent number was affixed to their namufactured Meteorite lights. The ship navigation lamp is important as an example of the evolution of marine safety technology. Countries began passing laws and regulations in the 1830s that required ships to show navigation lights at night or in poor weather. From the late 1840s colours were standardised; red for portside of the vessel and green for starboard, a white masthead light, and a white light at anchor. By 1914 the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was formed and continues, with decisions and notifications on improvements and changes.. Lamp; Portside ship's lamp is rounded in the front with two flat sides coming to a point at the rear. Glass has circular ridging. Metal handle with lid and clasp. The reflector has red colouring. Tripods similar to this were used in both WW1 and WW2. Note: Item 6482 is a Heliograph that was mounted onto a tripod such as this when it was used for surveying.Tripod with wooden legs painted in jungle green. The legs are attached to the apex with tarnished brass fittings, each secured with brass screws. Metal reinforcing plates protect the pointed end of each leg. A brass plate sits at the apex with a threaded rod positioned to allow the attachment of a heliograph or signal light. A khaki webbing shoulder strap for carrying the item is secured to one of the legs. At the bottom end of the strap is a webbing loop used to secure the tripod legs when closed. Maastricht, Holland, was the city where Petrus Regout established the De Sphinx pottery in 1836. De Sphinx operated under the name Petrus Regout & Co. until 1899. The firm was noted for its transfer-printed earthenware. Many factories in Maastricht are still making ceramics. The plate was created to celebrate the silver jubilee of Queen Wilhelmina in 1923.A ceramic plate decorated in blue with pictures and words. Central to the image is a coat of arms featuring a central lion and 4 identical hunting horns. The whole is surmounted by a crown. The rim is decorated with orange blossoms.The words read: "Mijn schilt en de betrouwen Syt Ghy O God myn Heer. Op U soo wil ick bouwen Verlaat my nimmermeer." These are words from the second verse of the National Anthem recorded in Old Dutch. The dates 1898-1923 also feature on the front of the plate. The back bears the maker's stamp, an imprint of a small arrow, an imprint of ¾ and the words "Made in Holland". The maker's stamp reads: "Petrus Regout & Co Maastricht". It is surmounted by a sphinx. There are also two holes in the rim to enable hanging of the plate.

Tony HANNING (1950- ) Dr Tony Hanning is an internationally recognised glass artist whose work is represented in all major collections in Australia and many overseas collections including the V&A Museum in London and the Tacoma Art Museum in the USA. He pioneered the ‘cased’ glass technique that involves two layers of different coloured glass carved in a cameo-like fashion. The imagery in Tony Hanning's work often is representitive of the Gippsland landscape.
