The bells were sent to the Melbourne Exhibition of 1881. They were awarded first prize. Guaranteed to chime to the sixteenth of a tone. They were purchased by Frederick Perkins Stevens and given to Christ Church Warrnambool as a gift in memory of his son, Frederick Stephen Stevens, who died at his Queensland property in1879.These German bells are the oldest matched peal in Australia.Three bells weighing 9cwt, 5cwt and 3cwt respectively, decorated with angels, medallions and inscriptionsThe largest bell has "Gloria in excelsis Deo: (Glory to God in the highest)"Vivos voco" (I summon the living) and "Motuos plango" (I bewail the dead). The painter of the work is unidentified. While the frame was made in Brisbane, the artwork is likely to be European in origin. The framer, William Lewis Hamilton, trading as A.L. Hambleton is listed in a Commonwealth of Australia Gazette of 1917. (No.113) in an application for copyright. The donor's ancestors, who included a number of amateur artists, lived in Coorparoo, Queensland.Oil on canvas mounted in an elaborate gilt wooden frame. The painting depicts a donkey and chickens in a barn. Donated by Rosemary Vaughan-Smith. A label on the frame is partly readable. It indicates that the frame was supplied by A.L. All three photos are of the Ballarat City Band preforming at the 1921 South Street Competitions. Frank Wright is the Bandmaster and conductor for the B grade competition and .1- for the "A grade" test piece the conductor was Bert Baile. Bob Pattie of the Ballarat Brass Band believes the Ballarat City Band with Frank Wright as Conductor travelled to Queensland to take part in a contest up there. This is supposed to be the very first time that a Victorian Band had gone to Queensland to take part in a contest. "Frank Wright is actually marching with his band. That's him near the side drummer. He has a bow tie on and dinner suit. Note the dog: In those days you couldn't keep a dog away from the Band Contest ... everyone in town was there!
