Barnes station building photographed in November 1962. The railway reached Echuca in 1864 and transformed the town into a major river port, with a famous wharf and substantial urban growth in the 1870s. In 1876 the Deniliquin and Moama Railway Company opened its 71 km (44 mi) private railway northwards to Barnes and Deniliquin, and the line at Echuca was extended across the Murray River into Moama to join the railway. This section was taken over by Victorian Railways in 1923, as part of the 1922 Border Railways Act. Barnes station was closed in 1979. This item was used by Victorian Railways in 1980's. It was inserted onto the side of railway freight wagons. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. Orbost Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as the terminus of the Orbost railway line, and closed in 1987. The station was located on the west side of the Snowy River despite the town of Orbost being on the east side of the river, in order to save on the costs of a bridge over the river, which at the time had highly variable levels This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost.A double -sided rectangular shaped label / sign, heavily laminated.Black print on light brown background. Ballarat Railway Station photographed from Platform 2. The tower can be seen without the clock which was only installed after a fire in the 1980s. The B class diesels were the first mainline diesel locomotives built for the Victorian Railways, in 1952-3. They were unusual in having a streamlined drivers cab at each end. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. For two years after the opening of the Colac-Beech Forest railway line trains were preceded by a ganger on a trolley to ensure no landslips or wash-a-ways created a danger to the trains. Afterwards the trains continued on their own. The line was built as cheaply as possible, "a mere skeleton of a railway" as one Victorian Railways spokesperson commented. With earthworks specified to the bare minimum landslips in the cuttings and wash-a-ways in sloping areas were always a problem, particularly in the early years before the works had time to settle. The line to Crowes was built to open in 1911 and a wash-a-way between Lavers Hill and Crowes was only to be expected. The photo shows Geelong No. 2 in Moorabool St at the intersection with Ryrie St. The tram has the destination of North. The tram is in its modified form that provides for one-man operation. In the photo are Edments, Savoia Cafe, Commercial Bank of Australia, and the T&G building. The photo has been dated between 1935 when the tram was converted and 1939 when the bar neon traffic lights were installed at the intersection. The photograph was taken from a Victorian Railways glass negative held at the State Library of Victoria. This small writing desk currently in the 'Smoker's ' lounge or Drawing Room can be seen in Victorian Railways photographs dated between 1925 and 1930's. This writing table has a raised back containing compartments for stationery printed with the Chalet letterhead provided for Guests to write letters and post cards. "Photographs of the main lounge taken between 1925 and the 30's confirm that the room was equipped with at least 2 small writing desks... Made of light coloured wood, they have raised backs containing compartments for stationery printed with the chalet letterhead. Two of the same historic desks remain at the Chalet today." Listed in Draft Inventory of Significant Collection Items. Two small blonde wood writing desks. Has backboard with upright document slots. Varnish is irregular.

Published by the Victorian Railways around 1929. "Over the years the VR Advertising Division published a number of booklets promoting Mount Buffalos winter sports and the restorative powers of its scenery in summer and winter." (Pg 119. Historica) This booklet provides a brief history of the Chalet and features excerpt from a speech by Dr Wilkinson. The beautiful graphic illustrates a tale of the Manfield brothers communicating nightly by fires to family in the valley. The artist is possibly James Northfield or Percy Trompf, whose lithographic posters and promotional material for the Railways were iconic of the time and promoting tourism in Australia was an important National enterprise. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. Victorian Railways Rail & Tram Monthly Periodical with conditions of travel on the inside. See reference page 124/125 and Figure 6-33. All tickets were available for 60 only tram trips, but allowed unlimited rail trips with 60 separate squares for a tram conductor to punch. This ticket is for First class travel, from North Road to Melbourne, though the rail portion only provided for first-class travel. Ticket No. 002 for September 1948. Colour of the ticket and markings varied for each month. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. S Class Locomotives - The eighteen members of the S Class were ordered in two batches by the Victorian Railways from Clyde Engineering for express passenger and freight workings, with the final eight locomotives ordered specifically to work the North-East standard gauge line. Many were named after prominent Victorians.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.The first standard gauge passenger train from Sydney to Melbourne pulled by Locomotive S314. This was made possible when part of Australia's gauge problem was solved with the construction of a new standard gauge line. The new line was a 317 km long line running from Albury, NSW, parallel to the existing broad gauge line to Melbourne, connecting Australia's two largest cities by standard gauge. S314 entered service on 24 April 1961 and was named after Sir John O'Shannassy who was the second Premier of Victoria. The S314 pulled the first passenger train to travel straight through from Sydney to Melbourne on 13 April 1962. On the morning of 7th February 1969, the southbound Southern Aurora collided head-on with a northbound goods train near Violet Town, Victoria. The Locomotive S314 was hauling the goods train and was destroyed by the impact of the collision. Item used on the Victorian Railways Sandringham - Black Rock tram line for the short section of the single track of the line between the railway station in Station Street and the depot entrance in Bay Road. Tram drivers were required to carry this to prevent a head-on collision on the single-line section. Image 3 shows the driver placing the item in the "staff box" outside the depot. View of the Eltham Railway trestle bridge near Eltham Town Park with a train either approaching or leaving Eltham Station. A Tait 'red rattler' train is on the railway. The railway was commenced in 1900 and opened in 1902. It crosses the Diamond Creek on a timber trestle bridge just below where the Eltham Library stands today to the right on this view. The line was electrified in 1923. It is one of the few remaining similiar bridges remaining in Victoria. In 1976 when this was image was taken, Victorian Railways commenced works under the bridge to replace it with an earth embankment and large culvert pipes. In this picture can be seen steam locomotive J-521 and tender to which is attached State Car No. 5. It is believed that the other support carriages have been de-attached and the train has pulled up at the front of the platform allowing room for other trains to pull in. Immediately behind on the same track at the platform is a Diesel Electric Rail Motor (DERM) and C-class bogey (luggage) then a small (articulated) rail car (articulated) then a cattle van. On the adjacent track is State Car No. 2 (Melville) and a C-van. State Car No. 2 (Melville) was used a power generation car for special trains and the Train of Knowledge. State Car No. 5 is in the design of the Spirit of Progress. George Coop advised that the occasion is the visit of the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe to Echuca in 1963. Delacombe had replaced Sir Dallas Brooks in May 1963 who had departed for England on the liner Iberia,11 April 1963 (1963 'SIR DALLAS ON WAY TO U.K.', The Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 - 1995), 9 April, p. 9. , viewed 27 Jan 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article104249252) George believes the Governor was doing a considerable formal train ride around the State and Echuca was on the schedule. The ‘platform’ was a special creation for such purposes, located on the wharf spur line that ran behind the Echuca Civic Centre. The large notice board commemorates the Queen’s visit on March 5th, 1954 for which the platform was initially built. From time to time it would get spruced up with pot plants, fresh paint and repaired hand rails for formal functions. George attended the Civic Reception held for the Governor. NKS Type Gangers Trolly - Victorian Railways 2'6" gauge trolley - a KS series Section Car oftern called the Kasey Jones The narrow gauge version of the broad gauge KS series cars. They were classed NKS with two stroke motors. These cars were built by the Spotswood Workshops, with castings coming from the Newport Workshops. KS is lighter car capable of carrying 4 men or sevenhundredweight Trolly 9 was built for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria for use on their metre gauge railway of Yallourn. It was sold to a preservation group at Walhalla and regauged to 2 foot 6 inch. After a nearby mill closed down the Cashin family, who lived south of the mill site, requested Victorian Railways to keep the siding open for passenger use, which it did, but changed the name to Birnam in 1926. In 1927 it was moved south a little distance, closer to the houses it served. From left to right, awaiting the train, are the people it served, Tom Cashin, Ted Cashin, Arthur Cashin, the child Eva Facey, Jim Cashin, Sarah Cashin, the second child, Doris Hansen, Beatrice Hansen (nee Cashin), Bert Hansen, Jim Facey and Percy Facey. Trains with electric swing doors were often referred to as "dog boxes" or "doggies". They were manufactured at the Newport Workshops for the Victorian Railways. Swing Door cars had outward-opening doors. They were reasonably narrow, to ensure that two passing trains would not foul each other if doors were accidentally left open. The donor George Lister Coop was about 20 years of age when he took this photo. It is one of a small series of photos donated by him that relate to Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. He has always had an interest in railways and there are other examples of his documentation of railway history in other collections contributing to this database.
