Tool - Nesting weights
Troy ounces are slightly heavier than avoirdupois ounces that we commonly use. 1 troy ounce equals roughly 1 1/8 ounces and is used for the weighing of precious metals and gems. It is believed that the troy ounce dates back to the 16th century to the town of Troyes in Frances. This was a major trading centre for Europe and a standardised for of weights was needed. One troy ounce equalled 480 grains of barley.Two Sets of Troy weights all circular and tapering to the bottom plus two individual weights - 1oz. One Complete set of Troy weights round in shape and tapering to bottom with six inner weights imprinted with 6oz, 4oz, 2oz, 1oz and nothing on two inner smaller ones.2nd set is incomplete with three inner crucibles next size is missing and then smallest size 6oz 4oz 2oz 1oz . Domestic Object - QUALTROUGH COLLECTION: CANTEEN OF CUTLERY, 1933
Twenty six piece cutlery set. Cutlery is stored in a blue box with marbled pattern with fabric hinges. There are two gold coloured clasps to close the box. A silver coloured metal plate is attached to the top of the box with an engraved inscription. Presented to Mr & Mrs J Qualtrough by MOLOGA FRIENDS 9.9.33 Also STG.SII The Cutlery set was given to Henry Thomas and Elsie Qualtrough when they left Mologa in 1933 to return to Bendigo. The tray of the box is lined with blue satin. There is a central black velvet covered frame with indentations for six dessert spoons, four teaspoons and two tablespoons. There are two indentations for teaspoons at the top. One teaspoon is missing. Spoons and forks have the Maker's mark on the back of the handle Sheffield Eng. Stainless Steel. A small piece of paper has become detached with the name of the manufacturer C. J. Functional object - Tramcar door square key, State Electricity Commission of Victoria - Ballarat office, Mid 1930's?
Used by tram crews to secure doors in the open or closed position and to open the used ticket box. Part of the items issued to each traffic crew or maintenance staff to access or lock tramcars.Would have been issued at the time to a driver or conductor with the cap or traffic number of 18Piece of chrome plated steel rod bent at 90 degrees and shaped at longer end to give a square shape for use in external doors on SECV Ballarat Trams - known as a square key. Sign - Emergency Response - SEC Tram Depot Ballarat
Possibly made by local SEC Staff for the refurbished Ballarat Tram depot during the mid 1930's. Note the spelling of Depot with the accent.Demonstrates and provides information to Depot workers and Fire Fighters that the power had to be turned off to the Trolley Wire inside the depot using an emergency circuit breaker and where this equipment was provided before using a fire hose.Set of two wooden signs, with chamfered edges, red background with white painted letters, advising SEC Ballarat Depot workers or Firefighters that the power had to be cut to the Trolley Wire prior to using a fire hose in the depot building. An emergency button was provided in a circuit breaker box for this purpose. Tramway Track materials used to reconstruct or replace Ballarat Tramway Museum track between Carlton St and Depot Junction Sept 2019. Functional object - Tramcar platform or driver's foot gong
Used by tram drivers to warn road users of their presence or starting to move. MMTB drawing R8808 shows the mounting mechanism and operation. Demonstrates a tramcar warning device used by drivers.Cast steel and fabricated steel foot gong, consisting of cast bell, weighted striker or clapper operating mechanism and parts to enable it to be attached to the underside of the tramcar or driver's platform. The Foot gong plunger is missing. The clapper part has been extended by welding a section of steel onto it and a rolled section of stainless steel wire has been attached to ring it remotely from an overhead position. Functional Object - Four Wheel Flat top Trolley, Commonwealth Railways - Port Augusta Workshops (Understood), 1940's?
Four wheel flat top track trolley- deck wood frame and sides on four fabricated/pressed wheels, with bearings, axles- Used to transport materials- hand pushed or towed.
