In 1991, the Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA) produced 7 different options to provide public transport to the Doncaster area. See reference for background to the proposals. Six of the seven options have been found and collected. Each option provides a summary, costing based in a scope of works. The Options were: 1 - Light Rail to Doncaster Shoppingtown via Eastern Freeway/Doncaster Road 2 - Light rail to Mitcham Road/Springvale Road 3 - High-performance train to Doncaster Shoppingtown via Victoria Park station Eastern Freeway/Doncaster Road 4 - Heavy rail to Doncaster Shoppingtown via Eastern Freeway to Bulleen Road and underground to Shoppingtown 5 - Heavy Rail to Blackburn Road/George St East Doncaster 7 - Extension of the Camberwell Tram (72) along Burke Road from Cotham Road to Doncaster Road. The Public Transport Union was formed in 1993 from the various Australian Public Transport Unions, see reference. It was renamed as the Rail Transport and Bus Union in 1998 to reflect the impact of privatisation. Demonstrates a badge issued to members of the PTUBadge - Public Transport Union. The badge is made on a brass backing with the words "Public Transport Union" on the outer edge of the badge with a black enamel background. In centre of badge are images of the modes of transport the union covers - trams, rail, and buses on a yellow background within a map of Australia. Memorabilia - Matchbox Holder, Bryant & May, Souvenir of Melbourne's cable trams, 1940
Souvenir of Melbourne cable tram closure in Oct. 1940 - made to fit a box of matches to minimize damage to the box while being carried in a pocket. Consists of a printed photo of cable trailer 571 in Nicholson St Fitzroy with the Royal Exhibition buildings in the background. Lists the opening dates of the various lines. The matchbox is by Bryant and May, made in Britain. On the rear of the box is an advert for the Orient Line of Royal Mail steamers in Europe and Australia. Not know who made the matchbox holder. Second matchbox made by Bryant & May of Richmond - has a 2nd world war message on the box label. The photograph shows the busy intersection of Flinders and Swanston St with Flinders St station, along with cable trams, motor vehicles, and pedestrians. The sign above the station entrance is advertising the "Australian War Museum" at the Exhibition Buildings. The reference dates its opening as ANZAC day 1922 and moving to Sydney in 1925. The photo was probably taken soon after it opened as the sign above the station entrance was regularly changed. Note the Safety Zone sign on the eastern side of the intersection for eastbound trams. Gives personal details and his political involvement.Photocopy - 6 A4 pages of a letter to the BTPS dated 29-3-1995 concerning the history of James Duncan of Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide. From Mrs. Pat Cass of Kangaroo Island, SA. Has a covering letter re Duncan and Fraser and mentions Len Millar in Bendigo and Ballarat. Gives information about James Duncan history in coach building, including some notes on tram building, the Ford agency and other work, his membership of Adelaide organisations and date of birth and death.
