Photograph, R. Preston, Weeaproinah mallee shed, c.1920
Originally named 'McInnes' after a local selector, this station opened during construction of the Crowes railway on 1 May 1911. The name was altered to Weeaproinah, the second station of that name, on 9 December 1912, after the parish in which the station was situated. (The original 'Weeaproinah' on the railway became earlier 'Dinmont' in the Olangolah Parish.) The station comprised a passenger shelter and a loop siding with a ramped platform for a sheep and pig race. A departmental residence was built for a track repairer based at the station, but no station or caretaker staff were employed there. The residence was burnt down during the 1919 bushfire but it was replaced and remained in use as a departmental residence until 1930. Weeaproinah became an unattended crossing station in December 1927 under the Train Section Order system.B/W. Weeaproinah mallee shed. Functional object - Lantern with handle, c. 1900
This is a vintage item dating from the early 20th century. It is a hand-held lantern that could also have been hung from a ledge or wall. Lanterns of this type were often used by railway employees or ship's crew for signalling. The lighting was probably obtained by a candle as there is no evidence of an oil mechanism. This item is of interest because of its age and its possible use locally over a hundred years ago. This is a metal lantern painted black on the outside and silver-frosted inside. It has a rectangular-shaped body with bevelled glass, a semi-circular metal top and a metal handle. The hinged glass door on the side is missing.vintage lighting, hand-held metal lanterns -

photograph, 1893 - 1900
There is no information with this item. In the Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tamboon and Omeo Chronicle on Thursday August 3 1893, there is mention of a letter from Mr Harry Roberts, Marlo Road, "offering to sell the corduroy road to the council for £10, on condition that the council arranges for the exchange of the old road for one on the nothern boundary of his property.-Application to be made to the Lands department for the necessary exchange of roads to carry this proposal into effect. From the secretary for Lands, asking the council to mark the roads required in the M'Colloch on the plan,-Attended" This is likely to be the man in the photograph. This photograph seems to be associated with a very early settler in the Orbost / Marlo area. It is also a pictorial record of dress in the late 19th century.A sepia portrait photograph of a bearded man wearing a high-buttoned coat seated on a chair with a woman standing beside him on the right. Solomano Gas Producer Unit, circa 1940
Les Solomano tells us this unit was made by their cousin Frank Solomano and mounted on the passenger side running board of his A Model Ford, Spare bads of charcoal were tied to the rear door, so passengers had to get in and out through the driver side doors. It is the smallest Gas Producer unit we have seenThis Gas Producer unit is obviously a home made construction for a specific application. Absence of any air-cooling facilities suggests these may have been fitted separately inside the engine compartment. No specific marlings -
