Newspaper - Article, Old spacious home key to past Mitcham, 24/01/1968
Article in Nunawading Gazette about 'Windouran', a spacious home unchanged since its picture was used to boost Mitcham's first subdivision sale. It has been divided into 2 flats but still looks stately. In 1915 70 big home sites were sold in an area bounded by Mitcham Road, Halls Parade, Orient Avenue and Vernal Avenue. The estate was known locally as 'Mother Foster's Estate'. Mr James Thatcher brought the brochure to the Gazette - his grandfather, Joseph Lloyd bought land at that sale. David Lloyd (Thatcher's uncle) lived there. James Thatcher had an orchard at that time on a hill above Centre Road, Vermont.houses, windouran, windouran drive, mitcham, mitcham, thatcher, james, mitcham road, mitcham, halls parade, mitcham, orient avenue, mitcham, vernal avenue, mitcham, mother foster's estate, lloyd, joseph, lloyd, david, simon, kingsley -

magazines, The Girl's Own Paper, August 4 1888
The first weekly number of The Girl's Own Paper appeared on 3 January 1880. As with its male counterpart The Boy's Own Paper, the magazine was published by the Religious Tract Society (which subsequently became Lutterworth Press). In October 1929, the title became The Girl's Own Paper and Woman's Magazine but in 1930 the Woman's Magazine became a separate publication. In December 1947 the name was changed to The Girl's Own Paper and Heiress. By 1951 it was called Heiress incorporating the Girl's Own Paper. In 1956 Heiress closed down, and the name "Girl's Own Paper" ceased to exist. J. Hossack was probably James Hossack. The Hossacks were staunch Presbyterians. The Girl's Own Paper was an important and positive influence on generations of girls and women, and a vital outlet for women's writing and ideas, for more than three-quarters of a century.A black/white magazine with a masthead at the top of the front cover. The masthead is based on the sculpture The Spirit of Love and Truth by Joseph Edwards. There are black / white illustrations of young ladies and dogs on the cover. Work on paper - Photocopy of newsletter article, Gould League of Bird Lovers, "Parade of the Fairy Penguins", 1966
By 1966 when this poem and article were written by these state school students, the Phillip Island Penguin Parade had become famous and was a regular excursion destination for groups. The poem in rhyming couplets of 4 lines per stanza is typical of its time with human-centric description of the penguins in 'coat and tails', but both the poem and essay also indicate a growing interest in the evolution and behaviour at sea and on land of the Little Penguins. The Gould League of Bird Lovers, Victoria branch, which published these pieces in their 1966 edition of the Bird Lover magazine, was established for both children's 'nature studies' within school curricula, and for adults. The League published many booklets, posters and newsletters for schools and naturalists. The article demonstrates a growing interest in state schools in teaching students about Australian wildlife at the time. Little Penguins are very appealing to humans and given the accessiblity for viewing them at the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, provided teachers and students an ideal springboard for learning. Encouraging both poetry and essay form also indicated a broad approach to allowing students to express their knowledge and attitudes in various ways within the school setting. Also demonstrates the influence of the Gould League of Bird Lovers within the Victorian Education system.Photocopy of article. Black print on white paper with single greyscale image. Three-stanza poem "The Penguin" by Janice Ah Kee, followed by 4-paragraph description of life in the rookery by Diana Joseph.
