Always immaculately groomed councillor Kaele Way was a keen advocate for woman in local government. in 2005 she was elected to the Springfield ward. In 2007 she was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll for Women. She was one of only 20 at the time. In 2008 she co-authored a handbook for women for wishing to run for office. In2008 she became chair of the Australian Local Government Womens Association. In 2009 she became deputy chair of the Victorian Regional Development Association. She was also deputy chair man of the Victorian Regional Development for the Eastern Metropolitan area. In 2009 she was presented with an AM for her work for women in local government. Tom Mitchell was a strong supporter of trans-Tasman ski competitions and in the early 1950s visits between local clubs became common. In 1953 a team from New Zealand visited Falls Creek for the first time. This was only a few months after Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzig Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Toni St. Elmo, supported by Tom Mitchell proposed that a peak on the Bogong High Plains northwest of Mt. Nelse should be named Mt. Hillary in honour of the New Zealander's success. He also suggested a ceremony should be held during the visit of members of the New Zealand Ski team to Australia in September 1953. Both the garden and gallery were destroyed during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. Some of the sculptures were totally destroyed though a few did survive the fires.
