Commissioned by the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens and gifted to the Hepburn Shire in 2012. Historical Significance - In 1848, Irish immigrant John Egan took up land on the future town site then known as Wombat Flat. He and a party of searchers found alluvial gold in 1851 on ground now covered by Lake Daylesford initiating the local gold rush. Other finds quickly followed. With the finding of alluvial gold a town site was surveyed and founded in 1852. Initially called Wombat, it was renamed Daylesford. Cultural and Artistic Significance - Miriam Porter's 'Wombat' is a symbol of the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens where visitors and locals alike love being photographed. John Batman was born in New South Wales in 1801. With his brother, Henry, he moved to Van Diemen's Land in 1821. In 1824, John received a grant of 600 acres near Ben Lomond and in 1828 he married Eliza Thompson. Batman, with his friend J.H. Wedge and J.T. Gellibrand, determined on an expedition into New Holland. Motivated by Hume and Hovell's discoveries they applied for a grant of land at Western Port. Foreword: This Chronology extends from the first permanent settlement of "Port Phillip" or "Australia Felix," at Portland Bay, by Edward Henty, until the beginning of the proceedings of the first Town Council of Melbourne. In order to provide the necessary historical perspective, the Chronology has been preceded by a Summary of Historical Events. Many matters are here noted for the first time, and, through the courtesy of the Trustees of the Public Library of Victoria, the compiler was allowed to publish in full the diary kept by Sir Richard Bourke during his visit to Port Phillip in March, 1837. Until 1999 Burgess & Leigh was still being run by the family.|In August 1999 the factory was rescued from receivers by R&W Darling and the name changed to Burgess, Darling & Leigh.|As the business grew it was moved to a new factory in the rural district of Burslem. As with all industries, potteries have seen great changes and Burslem & Leigh adapted and modernised.|The business continues to this date. When E. Whitehead's New Map of Victoria was released in 1869, an advertisement in the Bendigo Advertiser (16 July 1869) noted that: "This beautifully engraved Map has been revised and brought down to the present time; and, with the Alphabetical Key, is the most complete and the cheapest Map ever published; Price, 6d plain; 1s colored; 2s 6d in case; on linen, post free, 2d extra. E.. WHITEHEAD and CO, Publishers, 67 Collins-street east." The following year, 1870, Whitehead's promoted the edition in the Portland Guardian and Normanby General Advertiser (3 January 1870), advising that: "WHITEHEAD'S NEW MAP OF VICTORIA, 1869 ... is corrected to the latest date, and around is arranged an Alphabetical Key, with Post Towns and Money Order Olffices marked. The Map being divided into squares and numbered, by reference to the Key any place can be found immediately. Price Is beautifully colored, or mounted on linen in case, 2s 6d. Post free, 2d extra, in Victoria. B. Whitehead and C0., Puolishers, 67 Collins-street East, Melbourne". In the same edition of the Portland Advertiser, they also promoted their business generally, saying: "E WHITEHEAD and Co., Stationers, Engravers, Lithographers, 67 Collins street East, execute every description of Lithographic PRINTING, BILL-HEADS. NOTE Headings. Business Dies Engraved and Embossed on Envelopes &c. ARMS, MONOGRAMS, AND CRESTS Engraved and Embossed in Colour, superior to any other house in the Colony. Specimens, post free, 2d. Lithographers, &c, to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, and Die-inkers and Embossers to His Excellency Sir J. H. T. Manners-Sutton, K C.B. Orders executed for the Trade". Whitehead’s New Map of Victoria 1869 is is an important record of region created towards the end of the Victorian Gold Rush (1851-1869).
