Summary

Foreword: This Chronology extends from the first permanent settlement of "Port Phillip" or "Australia Felix," at Portland Bay, by Edward Henty, until the beginning of the proceedings of the first Town Council of Melbourne. In order to provide the necessary historical perspective, the Chronology has been preceded by a Summary of Historical Events.Many matters are here noted for the first time, and, through the courtesy of the Trustees of the Public Library of Victoria, the compiler was allowed to publish in full the diary kept by Sir Richard Bourke during his visit to Port Phillip in March, 1837.In addition to the authorities quoted in the text, recourse has been had to the large collection of official documents in the Public Library of Victoria (including the collection of La Trobe papers), the Historical Records of Australia, and the books and pamphlets dealing with the first decade of this State.
