James Legge was born of Scots parentage at Dunolly, Victoria on 2 July 1873. He was educated at Scotch College Melbourne, and at the University of Melbourne. He worked as a teacher before starting the Theological course at Ormond College. He completed his theological training in 1902, and was appointed by the Home Mission Committee to the parish of Boort, where at Durham Ox he was ordained and inducted in May 1903. He married Susan Ison at the Collins St. Independent Church on 11 September 1907. Legge was called to Clunes (1907), Preston (1917), Mildura (1920), Dandenong (1924), and Kew (1926). Demitted 1942. Doolittle Raid occurred on the 18th April 1942 during WW 2.. The raid was the first air raid by the US Forces on Tokyo and Honshu and the Japanese Archipelago. A special unit of USAAF B25 Mitchell Bombers trained under the command of Col. James Doolittle flew from the carrier USS Hornet. B25 Mitchell Bomber had 2 Radial engines developing 1700 hp. Wingspan of 20.6 metres. Length 16.3 metres. It carried a crew of 4 to 6 personnel and had a range of 2175 kilometres and a bomb payload of 1360 Kgs.Important event of war against Japanese.57 cm x 38.5 cm. Ebonised and Gold frame. Booklet - Music Score, The 'M.N.' Ships Get Through, 1942
A song composition by Helen Ellis, of Kew, first known to have been performed in 1942 at the BBC for the 'Shipmates Ashore Programme it was then published 1943. A copy of this song and one other composition the composer Helen Ellis is held by the National Library of Australia. Promotional text also indicates that the song was performed by the notable Australian singer Peter Dawson. The song "The M.N. ships get through" carries an important acknowledgement of the oft forgotten vital role of the Merchant Navy as carrier of goods and supplies, and especially so in wartime. The publication is of special significance to the MTSV as an example of the many skilled and creative women who have supported the Missions to seafarers.Commercially printed single fold music score for a 2 verse song and chorus. Front cover with blue band at top and lower edge features the Merchant Navy insignia at top left with depiction in half tone blue of a Merchant ship convoy and at right a sketched depiction of head and shoulders of a Merchant Navy officer with binoculars in hand. Music score and full text printed on p.2 and 3. The back cover features text of chorus and a handwritten notation in blue ink with reference to performance of the song on a BBC programme, 'Shipmates Ashore'.Back cover-handwritten notation in blue ink: "Sung by Raymond ?(indecipherable) in the B.B.C. Dairy farmers kept a journal to record their transactions and business on the farm. John Creamer's daughter Mary Cardwell has her father's journal covering the years 1916 to 1942.The journal was kept by local dairy farmer John Creamer who farmed at Gundowring in the Kiewa Valley. It consists of names of local people and is representative of the business (produce and life) on the dairy farm at the time.Photocopied A3 sized pages from John Creamer's dairy journal covering the years 1916-1942. The book has an alphabet index for people's names with details of their purchases (eg. mutton and potatoes) with the cost in pounds shillings and pence. Page 15 has the title "Sows When Due to Parrow" and lists the cows by name. Only pages 1 to 61 have been copied except for pages 39-41, 49, 54, 55. The rest has been digitised.
