Letter sent with two photographs. Please find enclosed a couple of photos taken in Ballarat in 1962 which came from an album of my mother's Marian Mitchell (nee Robinson). She and some friends were on a road trip across Victoria to New South Wales. You are welcome to reprint these. One is of the Ballarat Rodeo and the other is of mum in the morning at their roadside camp in Ballarat. The sign on the shed has two words, the first one says Caledonia - the second perhaps you'll be able to find out? Both taken in 1962. I hereby give you permission for your society to re-print and distribute both these photos as you choose (although these aren't exactly the most expertly taken pictures). If more come our way over the course of my continued cleaning out of the cupboards I will send these too. This photo shows Bert May addressing a group of ladiers at the 1962 Golden Jubilee of the Orbost High School. Bert May served as the Member for Gippsland in the Legislative Council from 1957 until 1973. With earlier levels of schooling available at the Orbost State School or nearby schools of Newmerella and Jarrahmond School, it was not until April 1912, and after much campaigning from parents and other notable community members, that the Orbost Higher Elementary School was opened. Mr Richard Trembath was appointed the new Head teacher of Orbost Higher Elementary School and was assisted by Miss Olga Hirst. The senior class consisted of 26 pupils, and the junior class, 16 pupils. A limited curriculum was available which included lessons in Latin, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Geography, History, Drawing and advanced English. (ref. The ship HMAS Cerberus was Built at Jarrow, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1870, specifically for the colony of Victoria (Australia) and originally named HMVS Cerberus. It had a displacement of 3480 tons and could travel at the speed of 10 knots. The ship carried 4x 10 inch M.L.R. guns. The ship was renamed HMAS Cerberus in 1911 when the navy became the Royal Australian Navy. The photograph was mounted by members of HMAS Cerberus at Crib Point, Western Port Bay, Victoria in 1986. It was presented to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the HMAS Cerberus Museum in 1986 to commemorate the ship's 75 years of service for the Royal Australian Navy. This is a set of four photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in Dogera, Milne Bay Province and Kerema, Gulf Province of PNG in 1962. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control. In this era surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and tellurometers to measure base line distances between survey stations. From 1957 helicopter transport of survey parties revolutionised transport in remote areas.This is a set of four photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in PNG in 1962. The ball was held under the patronage of 'His Excellency the Administrator of the Commonwealth of Australia, General Sir Dallas Brooks.'
