Artist's Statement: I spent time visiting the barracks, museums, libraries, gaining information, making special pencil drawings and colour notes, when and where possible. Preparatory drawings for larger paintings were always on detail paper. The reason for this was I could use both sides, correfting mistakes on either side, until a satisfactory end. I use this procedure so that the surface of the painting paper was not effected by erasion. The final drawing was traced on having rubbed a stick of charcoal on the detail paper. I have used this procedure from my early days as a commercial artist. In drawing each horseman fully and tracing each horseman fuly in his place in relation to the whole and rubbibg out the parts covered by the nearer objects. Such essential things as legs and shadows are sure to be in the right place. Most of the pencil drawings of the palace gates, and other features I needed had to be made from a standing position. all these were filed for future reference. Everything had to be in the right proportion to the palace gates. The procedure for the Escort is as follows: If the Life Guards mount the escort an officer of the Blues rides at the right of the coach by invitation. The Guards officer rides on the left. Then follows the Standard flanked by a commissioned officer on the right. The trumpeter on the left. The trumpeter rides on a white horse. He has a selection of twelve different uniforms. After that follows the unit. The stirrups used by the officers are squarish. The troopers stirrups are a conventional form. All personnel riding and on no account rise in the stirrups as normally they would at the trot. This modifies the ragged impression of heads bobbing up haphazardly - their behinds become acclimatized in time." Gift of the Artist, 1981. Allan BERNALDO (05 August 1898-25 June 1988) Born Creswick, Victoria Allan Bernaldo won a scholarship to the Ballarat School of Mines to study Architecture. He received a certificate of merit in 1917, and the Ballarat School of Mines President's medal for the most meritorious Art student. Allan Bernaldo was editor of the Ballarat School of Mines Magazine in 1918. He became known as a commercial artist, teacher and water-colourist who specialiesd in horses and flowers. He died at St. Ronan’s Nursing Home in Armadale, Victoria and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, with his wife Florence Victoria May Elliott, who predeceased him in 1966. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This artwork was completed for the Drawing Teachers' Secondary Certificate at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of MInes. Albert E. Williams first studied art under Fred Foster after being awarded a scholarship to the Ballarat East Art School. In 1913 he became one of the first intake of 83 students to study the Merit Certificate at the newly opened Ballarat Junior Technical School. Williams was the second person to receive a certificate from that institution. He then studied under H.H. Smith for the Art Teachers’ Certificate at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School between 1915 and 1920. Williams joined the staff of the Ballarat Junior Technical School in 1921, teaching sign writing, ticket writing and house decoration. He taught in other technical schools between 1923 and 1928, returning to Ballarat in that year to fill a vacancy left by John Rowell . Williams continued his teaching career at both the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School and the Junior Technical School until 1942. He taught in various other technical schools from 1943, retiring as Headmaster of the Brighton Technical School in 1964. Albert E. Williams continued producing artwork throughout his career, and was responsible for the education of generations of artists and art teachers. Unframed pencil drawing of a plaster cast of a human figure known as the Dancing Faun, a marble sculpture first recorded in 1665, when Albert Rubens listed it as in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence (probably long owned by the Medici). By 1688 the sculpture was held by the Uffizi in Florence. In September 1800 the sculpture was sent to Palermo along with other treasures to avoid plunder by the French army, but it was returned to the Florence in 1803. By the 18th Century the Dancing Faun gained a reputation as one of the finest ancient sculptures in existence. A faun makes music by simultaneously playing the ‘crotala’ (similar to cymbals) in his hands and the ‘scabellum’ or ‘croupezion’ under his right foot. Rosalind LAWSON (11 January 1948 - ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Rosalind Lawson has spent much of her career working in rural environements, in Australia and Ireland. She has exhibited widely, and in 1997 won the Broken Hill Outback Art Prize. She holds a Master of Fine Art from R.M.I.T. (1995), a Diploma of Fine Art from R.M.I.T, A Diploma of Physical Education, from the University of Melbourne, and a Trained Teachers' Certificate from Melbourne Secondary Teachers' College . Between 1989 and 2012 Ros Lawson Lecturered in painting, drawing, papermaking, and was a tutor in Art History, at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy (now Federation University). Geoffrey MAINWARING (29 October 1912-13 April 2000) Born Adelaide, South Australia Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an art teacher at Thebarton Technical School (1928-36). Mainwaring was adept at depicting a variety of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and was very competent using a variety of media, including pencil, oils, and watercolour. He was a confident draftsperson, and completed many sensitively rendered portraits that give an insight into the character of the sitter. In June 1941 Geoffrey Mainwaring (SX13471) joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after five months was transferred to the Engineers and employed as a Sergeant-Instructor, specialising in demolitions. In late 1942, he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probation. On 27 May 1947, Mainwaring was discharged from the Army, having served for five and a half years. He was appointed as an artist on a civilian basis until his paintings were completed in March 1948. In 1949 he was appointed Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines (now Federation University Australia). He continued to paint commissioned portraits for the Australian War Memorial until the late 1950s. Geoffrey Mainwaring died at Ballarat in April 2000. David Alexander was a medical doctor in Ballarat for many years. Alongside his medical work he was a committed artist, producing a large body of work over his lifetime. He was an instigator of the Federation University Art Collection and was a great supporter of local artists. Geoff Mainwaring taught painiting at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
