This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. The Ernest Lehmann Co was founded in 1881 by Ernest Paul Lehmann in Brandenburg, Germany. Lehmann exported vast quantities of toys to the United States from 1895 to 1929 (excluding years of WWI). In 1921, Mr. Lehmann’s cousin, Johannes Richter joined the firm and built on the Lehmann reputation by patenting toys. Lehmann specialized in lithographed tinplate, mechanical transportation toys, and figures known for colorful patina. This toy was manufactured between 1924 and 1935. The Lehmann catalogue describes the toy as “[a] Mexican zebra team. The zebra refuses to be tamed and leaps about wildly.” It is believed to have been inspired by an unsuccessful German stud farm in Dar es Salaam that attempted to cross-breed zebra with domesticated horse.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is representative of popular children's toys in the 1920s and 1930s.This is a tin, lithographed, windup toy featuring a zebra and Mexican style driver. By the 1950s and 1960s the company branched out into electric shavers, kitchen appliances and hair care products. Home hair styling sets and hot rollers became popular in the 1960s and continued to be an important woman's styling appliance throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1975 this product was advertised at a price of $37.95. From 1984 until 2007, Braun was a wholly owned subsidiary of Gillette, which had purchased a controlling interest in the company in 1967. Braun is now a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, which acquired Gillette in 2005.Personal grooming items such as this became important personal accessories and grooming tools for women throughout the mid 20th century across Australia.This hair styler set contains 20 hair rollers which were heated by placing them on the 20 heating posts fitted inside the unit in the case. This hat belonged to a Warrnambool undertaking firm, Beattie and Phillips. This firm was established by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips in 1865 and was originally situated in Koroit Street. Beattie’s son, James, took over the business in 1916 and moved to new premises at 82 Fairy Street about 1928. In 1945 the business management was transferred to James Leahy and the firm continued until 2000. The top hat was used by both James Beattie and James Leahy and would have been one of several used by the employees in this undertaking business. The suppliers of the hat were Cramond and Dickson (note that the name ‘Cramond’ is misspelt on the hat itself). John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established their clothing and drapery and ironmongery business in Warrnambool in 1855 and it continued to operate in Liebig Street until 1974. This is a highly significant item for three reasons: 1. It belonged to, and was used by, two directors of the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips, a most prominent business in Warrnambool for 135 years 2. It was supplied by the firm of Cramond and Dickson, a dominant retail shop in Warrnambool for 119 years 3. It is an important example of a social custom of the past – the wearing of formal wear, including a top hat, by funeral employees (even to the extent of taking the hat by rail for funerals etc outside of Warrnambool) This is a black top hat with paper and silk inserts in the inside crown and a brown leather lining stitched on to the inside of the brim. There is black corded ribbon around the brim and around the outside of the hat. The brim is made of felt with the crown showing a shiny pile. There is a small round metal insert on the top of the crown. Silver silk, with a jacquard woven floral pattern. Long sleeves have pleated tops, forming a leg-o-mutton sleeve, which gathers in at the elbows, to a narrow fitted sleeve to the wrist. A 4cm wide band of cream satin embroidered and corded lace. Cream cording and lace trims the cuffs, the shoulder/arm hole seam, and two bands on each side of the V shaped cross-over bodice. Metal press-studs fasten the cross over bodice at the waistline. Cream satin with embroidered lace overlay forms a 5cm wide stand-up collar and a centre front panel at neckline. Twelve metal hooks and eyes fasteners fasten the grey cotton front lining of the bodice. The cotton lining of the bodice is part machine, and part hand stitched. The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES) produced electricity for the people living in the Kiewa Valley and beyond to many parts of Victoria. The people and their families working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme were encouraged by their employer the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to purchase and use electrical appliances. The iron was popular as it was quick and easy compared to those used previously. This iron belonged to Ron White who was a senior member of staff during the construction and operation of the KHES.This iron was owned by Ron White. Ron was appointed Area Operations Engineer at Kiewa in June 1956. He was later appointed as General Superintendent and then in 1974 appointed to principal Hydro Engineer of the recently titled Hydro Division.Electric iron with long cord attached at the side toward the back. Iron shape is of an oblong with pointy front. When laid down, the black handle is at the top with a red button centre front (to choose between steam and dry). Under the handle is the 'turntable' (used to select type of material/heat). At the front of the black is an outlet for the steam. This item is from the "Barone" Collection. "Barone" (also known as "Seaview") was a stately Brighton home built at 9 Moule Avenue prior to 1855 and demolished in 1986. The house's residents included Edward Elgin Browne (during 1859-72), a Melbourne tea merchant, and the family and descendants of retired Scottish Army captain Archibald Black (during the period 1880-1970). Its neighbors included “St Ninians” owned by the Ward Cole family, “Seacombe” owned by the Moule family, and the home of James Grahame and his family. The items in the "Barone" collection were largely donated by two of the house's later owners, Mrs Doris Halkyard and Mrs Brian Brandt. Brighton Historical Society records indicate this bonnet was worn at the death of Archibald's widow, Isabella Black, in 1912. Other records held place Isabella Black's death in 1915. The Bell was presented to the Mission by the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line in October 1957, after the ship made her final voyage to Australia in 1956 and it was broken up in Barrow in April 1957 by Thomas W Ward (UK). Telephones were mounted on the wall and were operated by turning a small handle situated in the middle of the phone. This connected the speaker to the switch board where they were 'put through' to the other end (speaker).Wall phones were used by State Electricity Commission of Victoria workers and their families on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. This inventory of the contents of the old Museum in Warrnambool dates from the 1920s. A Mechanics Institute under the management of a local committee was established in Warrnambool in 1854 and a Mechanics Institute building was erected in Liebig Street in 1871 (site of present Municipal Library). Museum items and art works began to be collected and housed in the Mechanics Institute building at that time under the care of a committee member and local policeman, Joseph Archibald. This collection did not survive in any significant form after Archibald left the town but it was revived and vastly expanded when he retired and returned to Warrnambool in 1880. Archibald is regarded as the founder of the Museum which officially dates from 1883. In 1910 the Warrnambool Town Council took over the management of the Mechanics Institute, including the Museum collection. This museum continued until 1963 and was a much-loved institution in the city. The contents of the old Museum were dispersed, with many items lost but a considerable portion of the collection was under the care of Warrnambool Art Gallery and John Welsh, the Director in the 1970s, in an effort to keep the records of the old Museum intact, had the 1920s inventory reprinted. This inventory of Warrnambool’s old Museum is of considerable historical importance as it is an almost complete record of the Museum’s contents in the 1920s and so is very useful to researchers today.This is an inventory of 190 pages with a cardboard backing. The pages have three punched holes on the left side and are tied together with black and white cotton cord. At the front of the pages is a plastic envelope with a heading. The pages contain typed material, mostly in mauve ink and these are copies of the original typing. The typing on some pages is very faint and two pages have been re-copied to make them more legible.
