The words for this song come from a Christmas song by Christina Rossetti. The poem was first published in 1885. The words have been set to music many times but the composer of this piece is James A. Steele, a well-known Australian music teacher and composer in the mid 20th century. This sheet music is retained as an interesting piece of music from the mid 20th century. As well, the owner of the music appears to have been Shirley Goldstraw, a descendant of the Goldstraw family that settled in the Naringal/Nullawarre area in the mid 19th century. This is a sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. The pages contain the music for a song called ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’. This certificate is an invitation to the opening of the first Parliament of Australia on January 1st 1901 in Melbourne. On this date the six Australian self-governing colonies were federated to become the six states of Australia. The designers of the certificate were Norman Lindsay and John Longstaff. This particular invitation was sent to George Rolfe and his wife and two of his stepdaughters, Annie and Florence. George Rolfe (1836-1919), a tea merchant from Melbourne, began buying blocks of land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1870s. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in the town, including farming properties and used the buildings near the mouth of the Hopkins as holiday accommodation. He called his property Lyndoch which he improved with the addition of stables, chaff and bone sheds, jetty, boathouse, reservoir, water well and windmill and extensive gardens and he spent most of his later life in this Warrnambool area. Lyndoch today is the site of an aged care facility. This certificate is of considerable importance for two reasons: 1. It is an important memento of a signal event in Australia’s history - the Federation of the States in 1901. 2. The certificate was an invitation to the family of a prominent Warrnambool person – George Rolfe of Lyndoch.This is a piece of thick paper with illustrations and decorations in brown, red, blue, yellow and green tonings. The lettering is in white with coloured capital letters. The images include the shields of the six Australian States, the Coat of Arms of Britain and Australia, outlines of two trees (gum tree and oak tree) and three symbolic female figures representing Justice, Britannia and Australia. This is an invitation to George and Annie Rolfe of Lyndoch, Warrnambool, to attend the opening of the first Australian Parliament in Melbourne in May 1901. A smaller invitation card was first sent to the recipients and this larger invitation was sent after the event for the recipients to keep as a souvenir. The six Australian colonies became six Australian States in the newly-formed Commonwealth of Australia in January 1901. Handkerchiefs have been used for centuries as a piece of cloth deemed useful for personal hygiene. They are usually kept in one's pocket but at times through history have been fluttered to attract attention or send a message. In harder times they proved to be a cheap item often used to add interest to an outfit. This item is one of five handkerchiefs which were brought back from France after WW1 by great uncles of Gloria Redman and have been passed down through her grandmother and mother.This item has significance as an item linked to a local family and World War 1 and as such has social, and historical significance. This photograph was donated by the Bread and Cheese Club, Melbourne but it is not know to what group or institution it was originally given. It is a copy of a well-known photograph of John Feltham Archibald, taken about 1910 when he was obsessed with all things French and was known at the time as Jules Francois Archibald. John Archibald (1856-1919) was born at Kildare near Geelong (so is not a native of the Warrnambool district) but he lived for some time in Warrnambool with his family. He began his working life with the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper and its successor, the Warrnambool Standard before going to Melbourne. In N.S.W. in 1880, he established with John Haynes, the Sydney Bulletin , a journal that became the most influential one of its day, promoting nationalism and fostering Australian writers and poets. He left legacies to establish the Archibald Prize for artists and the Archibald Fountain in Sydney. This photograph of John Archibald is of some interest though it is a widely-known one and is not original. It is kept because John Archibald, a national figure in Australian History of some importance, spent his school years in Warrnambool in the 1860s and 70s where his father was a local policeman. He went to Henry Kemmis’ Warrnambool Grammar School and wrote about his time here in later years, He also commenced his career as a journalist with the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper and later the Warrnambool Standard newspaper before going to Melbourne. This is a black and white photograph of John Archibald, mounted on cardboard. This calendar was issued to customers of Harry Taylors Mens Shopin Warrnambool in 1962. Harry Taylor came to Warrnambool in 1932 and opened a menswear shop in Liebig Street. By 1962 Harry’s sons were running two shops at 132 and 136 Liebig Street. In the 1980s the shop at 132 Liebig Street was known as Taylors Colonial. Today this shop is still operated by members of the Taylor family under the name of Surfodesy. Members of the Taylor family been associated with men’s wear and sports wear shops in Warrnambool, for over 80 years and so any historical item connected with the shops is of some importance. The production for customers of a yearly calendar by businesses was, and still is, a feature of our social history.This is a 1962 calendar printed in blue and red on white paper. It has been produced for Harry Taylor’s Men’s Shop in Warrnambool and features two photographs, one of Margaret Smith, the tennis player and one of the Duke of Edinburgh. This catalogue was written by Joan Luxemburg for the Art Gallery of Ballarat Exhibition of James Meek works (13th June to 9th August 2015). It is not intended as a full biography of James Meek and concentrates on his decorative works. Joan Luxemburg has spent many years researching the life and works of James Meek and the exhibition and catalogue are part of a PhD project at Federation University. A biography of James Meek by Joan Luxemburg is due for publication in 2016. English-born James Meek, a fisherman, cannery operator, poet, writer, explorer in the Otway district, librarian, calligrapher and accountant, was one of the first settlers in Ballarat, building the first house and establishing a cordial and sly grog business. After some time in Melbourne he came to the Warrnambool area, becoming an early settler in the Peterborough area and establishing a cannery there. In Warrnambool he set up a commercial fishing company which failed, organized an Otways exploration trip looking for gold and established a reputation for producing fine calligraphy works. He was in New Zealand from 1874 to 1890 and died in Warrnambool in 1899. This catalogue is important because it records the decorative works of James Meek, an important early settler in Warrnambool and district. Meek was well-known in Warrnambool in the 1850s and 60s as a commercial fisherman, an Otways explorer, a writer and lecturer and a calligrapher. One of his daughters married Peter Dallimore, a fellmonger at Lake Gillear and the Dallimore family is also prominent in our history. This album contains a collection of family photos, greeting cards and hand drawn floral emblems. Among the photographs are two which have details on them: a young girl named Margaret Clarke aged 8 1870 and another of Charles Alexander Clarke. The photographers are from many places including Britain, Melbourne, Portland and a number by Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke was one of Warrnambool’s more important photographers, operating a business for thirty years in the town. He also worked as an artist and taught art in local schools. He painted a number of versions of Tower Hill. He died in 1918 at the age of 91.This album shows a collection of photographs and cards which were important to families in the later part of the 19th century. It has artistic and historical significance, with the photographs in particular depicting many different styles of clothing and household details of the time. This mug with the name inscribed on the side was perhaps a present for a child. No information has been found on Henry Reeves though there have been well-known families bearing that surname in Warrnambool’s history.This mug, at this point of time, has no known local significance, but it is an attractive item and will be useful for display. This is a white china mug or cup with coloured flowers and foliage painted on the sides. The handle has a blue decoration and the rims of the base and the top are blue. There is a crack on the side and some staining on the inside of the mug. This cookery book was produced in 2014 as a school fundraiser. It was purchased at Allansford Cheese World in January 2015 for $15. Allansford school was established as a National School in 1856 on land reserved for the purpose by John McMahon Allan. It comprised two sandstone classrooms -one for boys and one for girls -with an attached pise teacher's residence. In 1872 when the Victorian Education Department was set up existing schools were listed in alphabetical order and given a number. Allansford State School was No.3. The school was enlarged in the late 1800s and again in the early 1920s. In 1994 following the amalgamation of the Allansford, Allans Forest and Naringal schools a new school was built which adjoined the existing buildings. The old buildings were refurbished as administration and staff facilities. John McMahon Allan settled in the area in 1839 with his brother William Osborne Allan. They were the sons of David Allan, Deputy Commissary General during Macquarie's term of government. The brothers divided the station with William retaining the Allandale portion and John naming his portion Tooram. John McMahon Allan was president of the early district Roads Board. In an attempt to recoup some of the heavy losses due to the disastrous Bateman fire of 1854 John subdivided a portion of Tooram at the Hopkins River crossing known as Allans ford. Daisy Vickers collection: Item 1 of 27.Nance Moore, nee Vickers has a collection of post cards which were sent to her older sister Daisy Vickers, (later Mrs Ogier) by her uncle Arthur Anderson between August 1916 and October 1918. There is also one card from Ike – assumed to be Ike Primmer, an uncle by his marriage to Ida Anderson sister of Daisy’s mother. There are seven envelopes addressed to Miss Daisy Vickers, Bushfield Post Office. Daisy was born in 1907, so would have been a young girl of about ten years. There are nine cards – Arthur’s were sent from France and Belgium, Ike’s from Glasgow. The messages are simple. There are three embroidered cards. Some of the messages are responses to Daisy who must have sent letters or cards to her uncles. Daisy Vickers/Ogier was a long serving, much loved and respected teacher and senior mistress at Warrnambool Technical School. These are three volumes of Peloubet’s Select Notes. The book contents are described as ‘Inductive, Suggestive, Explanatory, Illustrative, Doctrinal and Practical’. The books were issued as curriculum material for Sunday Schools and were first published in the mid 1870s and continued to be published for the next 100 years. These three volumes belonged to M. P. McMeekin and this is presumed to be Margaret Parker McMeekin (1868-1948), the daughter of John McMeekin and Isabella Parker of Warrnambool. John McMeekin was the Rate Collector and Inspector and then the Valuer for the Warrnambool Shire in the 1860s, 70s and 80s. Two sons, William and James, operated a produce export business in Kepler Street under the name of McMeekin Brothers and another son, Charles was an auctioneer in Warrnambool. It is surmised that Margaret McMeekin was a Sunday School teacher either in Warrnambool or Port Fairy. These books are of interest as examples of what was taught in Sunday Schools in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are also of interest because they belonged to Margaret McMeekin, a member of a prominent family in Warrnambool at that time. These are three books of a religious nature written by F. and M. This is a novel written by Ethel Patricia Stonehouse under the name of Lindsay Russell. She was born in Nhill in 1883 and was educated at Charlton State School. From 1894 on she wrote verse and short stories and worked as a journalist in Melbourne. She published her first novel in Melbourne in 1912 and lived for a time in London where she met Dr John Scott whom she married in 1914. After the First World War she came to live at Mortlake and her novel writing ceased. Most of her novels are about women rebelling –against Catholicism, Calvinism, the English class system and the restraints of marriage. Her railings against the Catholic Church and the oppression of women caused her to be a controversial figure, especially in Mortlake, but she was a popular novelist with one of her books, ‘Smouldering Fires’, selling over 100,000 copies in Australia alone. She died in 1964. No details on the inscription or the recipient of the book, ‘Isie’ have been found. The name, ‘Glasgow’ suggests that the book at some stage was connected with the Glasgow family of Wangoom. They were important local dairy farmers and cheese makers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.This book is of great interest because it was written by an Australian woman and one who lived for many years in Mortlake, a town close to Warrnambool. The connection with the Glasgow family is also of interest. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages. The book has a dark blue cover with gold lettering on the front cover and spine and some gold scroll work on the front cover. The book has a Prologue and 22 chapters and contains advertisements at the front and the back of the book for other books published by Ward, Lock & Co. There is a black and white illustration at the front of the book with a piece of tissue paper covering it. The page at the front of the book that contains an inscription is detached. The inscription and another annotation are written in black ink. This is an early school arithmetic book with the front preface indicating it is the third edition published in 1842. The book appears to have been used about the 1860s by members of the Bell family who probably lived at Cudgee. The names of the children, presumably the Bell children, are scattered throughout the book – Margaret, Walter, Sarah and William. No information is available on this Bell family though there are records of births in Warrnambool of Bell children in the 1850s to William and Jane Bell. Cudgee, a small settlement on the Cudgee Creek, is about 16 kilometres from Warrnambool. This book is of some minor interest because of its age and because it has some association with the Bell family who may have lived at Cudgee in the mid 19th century. The exercises in the book are of interest as examples of the arithmetical problems given to children in the mid 19th century. This is a hard cover book of 282 pages. The cover is dark brown with gold lettering on the spine but the front cover and part of the first few pages are missing. The pages are ragged and dog-eared and quite dirty in places. The original inscription in this Bible is interesting but no information has been found on Mary MacLeod or Hazel O’Moore-Skelly except to note that Eleanor Hazel Cameron, nee O’Moore-Skelly, (1914 -1989) is buried in the Allambie Park Cemetery, Albany. The Bible was given to Berenice Angus by Sister Ingpen of Warrnambool. The accompanying note that indicated that it came from Sister Ingpen is now missing. The later inscriptions indicate that Berenice Angus had this Bible in the early 1950s at her school in Geelong, ‘The Hermitage’. Sister Amy Ingpen (1878- 1965) was an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. She trained as a nurse and was said to be the first Victorian country nurse to qualify for the Midwifery Certificate. She initially assisted Dr Thomas Scott and later Doctor Gerald Baldwin at the ‘Alveston’ Private Hospital (corner Darling and Banyan Streets, Warrnambool). She then took sole control of the private hospital and ran this hospital for a great number of years, providing expert care for midwifery, surgical and medical cases. Berenice Angus (Berry McDade) is the daughter of Dr Roy and Gladys Angus. Dr Angus (1901-1970) came to Warrnambool in 1939 and practised at ‘Birchwood’ in Koroit Street and in later years as an ophthalmologist. This book is of interest because of its connection with Sister Ingpen, a prominent nurse in 20th century Warrnambool and the Angus family of Warrnambool. This is a black soft leather- covered Bible of 1208 pages. The cover extends over the edges of the pages. It has gold lettering on the spine and gold edging on the pages. The inside covers are black. The book has been silk bound but is now partly detached from inside the spine. Some pages are loose and have been mended with glue. Some of the pages have ink staining and the cover is worn with the top and bottom of the spine cover broken and torn. This plate has been produced by the English firm of W.H.Grindley for use at the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. The Criterion Hotel was on the western side of Kepler street near Lava Street and was established in 1872 with the first licensee being John Tate. The hotel closed in 2008, was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and was demolished in 2013. The Humm family had a long association with the Criterion Hotel, with George Humm of Woodford taking over as the licensee in 1882 and buying the hotel in 1887 and remaining there until his death in 1894. George Humm’s widow, Elizabeth, was the licensee from 1894 to 1907, her son, John was the licensee from 1907 to 1916 and his widow, Bridget, was the licensee from 1916 to 1919. The plate could have been in use for all or part of these years but is most likely to have been bought early in the 20th century. This plate is of considerable interest because it came from the Criterion Hotel, a prominent hotel in Warrnambool for over 130 years.This is a white china plate which has a red embedded stamp in the shape of a belt (the maker’s trademark) on the front and on the back it has the blue markings of the maker with an image of a crown. The bowl has a shallow base and was perhaps a soup plate. This plate has been made by the Globe Pottery Company in England and supplied by the china merchant firm of John Dynon and Sons of Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. As it has the mark ‘Cobridge’ on the back of the plate, it was made before 1934. It was used at the Warrnambool Criterion Hotel which was on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street. This hotel was established in 1872 with the first licensee being John Tate. It closed in 2008, was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and was demolished in 2013. During the first 30 years of the 20th century licensees at the Criterion Hotel included members of the Humm family, Theresa Lynch and Henry and Margaret McGennan. The plate could have been used for all or part of these times and even at a later date. This plate is of considerable interest because it came from the Cruterion Hotel, a prominent hotel in Warrnambool for over 130 years.This is a circular white china plate with a shallow base probably used as a soup plate. This plate has been made by the Globe Pottery Company of England and supplied by the china merchant firm of John Dynon and Sons of Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. It was used at the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. The Criterion Hotel, situated on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, was established in 1872 with the first licensee being John Tate. The hotel closed in 2008, was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and was demolished in 2010. This plate, being marked with the name ‘Cobridge’, was made before 1934. In the first three decades of the 20th century the licensees at the Criterion Hotel were members of the Humm family, Theresa Lynch, Henry McGennan and Margaret McGennan. The dinner plate could have been used for all or part of these years and could have been used later as well. This plate is of considerable interest as it was used at the Criterion Hotel, a prominent hotel in Warrnambool for over 130 years. This is a circular white china plate with a rim and a slight indentation at the base. There is a red embedded stamp in the shape of a belt on the top edge and the grey stamp of the maker on the bottom of the plate. This plate was probably used as a small dinner plate. These saucers are part of a crockery set that belonged to George Rolfe and his family. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a tea merchant in Melbourne who bought land at the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1880s. He had adjoining land and the properties of ‘Shipley’ and ‘Fairy Hill’ and developed ‘Lyndoch’, adding stables, jetty, boat house, windmill and reservoir, chaff and bone sheds and an extensive garden. In 1891 he married Annie Lake and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built the ‘Lyndoch’ house still standing today. ‘Lyndoch’ today is now the site of an Aged Care Facility. This item is part of the Rolfe Dinnerset as described on Victorian Collections at VC001420 and VC001422.These saucers, part of a crockery set, are kept because they belonged to George Rolfe, a prominent property owner and farmer in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The items, dating from 1864, have social significance showing the type of crockery used by a more affluent family in the 19th century. These are six circular china saucers with a gold rim and ornamentation in a scallop design in gold and teal around the rim and the outer edges. The base of the saucers has a gold rim. One of the saucers has a chip on the edge and four show significant wearing of the inner gold circle. Some of the outside gold edging also shows wear. This item would have been made as a stand to display shoes in a shop. It may have been made locally in Warrnambool. As this item was donated to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by a member of the Dickson family some years ago, it is highly likely that the stand was used for display purposes in the Warrnambool department store of Cramond and Dickson. This store, selling mainly men’s and ladies’ wear, was established by John Cramond and James Dickson in Warrnambool in 1853 in Timor Street and it later moved to Liebig Street, closing in 1973. This stand is of interest as an example of the type of stand used for display in shops early to mid 20th century. It is also significant as a possible memento of the Cramond and Dickson shop which was so important in Warrnambool’s history.This is a shoe stand with a wooden stick or pole tapering slightly to the top and ridged in three places. The pole is mounted on a wooden pedestal which is rectangular-shaped and which is indented to form a smaller rectangular base. A small wooden piece in the shape of a flat bottom of a shoe is attached to the pole with a metal bolt and nut. These are three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’, a publication issued in 1910 by the Victorian Government containing information and photographs of places in Victoria. There are fifteen pages describing Warrnambool. One copy belonged to Bert and Henri Worland. It is presumed that Bert was the older brother of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Henri Worland was one of Warrnambool’s most important historians and was responsible for collecting much of the historical material that is now in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. He also wrote about Warrnambol’s history and was well-known in the 1940s for his 3YB radio broadcasts about Warrnambool’s history. His brother Albert was an insurance agent in Warrnambool. This book is of considerable importance as the material on Warrnambool and district covering the year 1910 is of great interest to historians today and is much used. There is a wealth of information on many Warrnambool businesses at that time. The connection with the Worland family is also of interest. These three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’ contain information on Victoria early in the 20th century and contain printed text, many black and white photographs and illustrations and advertisements for Victorian businesses. .1 A hard cover book with a dark blue cover and a pasted brown covering on the front and back cover. The front cover has white lettering and an image of a shield with a crown and the Southern Cross and the back cover has an illustrated advertisement for Buchanan’s Whisky. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue ink. .2 The cover is completely detached and the spine is missing. There are 14 pages missing at the end of the book. .3 The cover is missing with a photocopied front page. This book is an early school reader for the Fifth Grade. It appears to be a British publication and has no Australian content (except for a brief biography of Captain Cook). The name ‘Matilda F.’ from Mailors Flat can probably be identified as Matilda Freckleton as the Freckleton family members were prominent settlers in the Mailors Flat area in the early 20th century. Matilda Freckleton (1886-1957) was the daughter of Francis and Catherine Freckleton. She married Calvin Chambers in 1906. This book is of minor interest as it is an example of an early school reader and it probably belonged to an early Mailors Flat resident, Matilda Freckleton. This is a soft cover book of 414 pages. The original front cover has been lost and a piece of grey cardboard has been used as its replacement. The back cover was originally a brown colour. The spine is now covered with a piece of grey material stitched on to part of the original spine. Some front and back pages are missing. The text has three sections and these contain prose extracts, stories, poems, hymns and work exercises. There are some black and white illustrations. A couple of pages are loose. Pasted in at the front and back pages are cuttings from newspapers. The handwritten material is in blue ink and pencil. This Bible belonged to Meryl Swinton, a member of the Swinton family well-known in Warrnambool. William and Ann Swinton came to Warrnambool in 1854 and established a store in Timor Street and several branches of their business in other local towns. The Swinton family still has commercial interests in Timor Street. This Bible is of interest as it belonged to Meryl Swinton, a member of the Swinton family, prominent in business and community circles in Warrnambool since the mid 1800s. This is a hard cover book of 1016 pages. It has a brown leather cover with lettering embossed on the front cover and with gold lettering on the spine. The spine has become partly detached and has been mended in the past with adhesive tape, traces of which still remain on the spine and on the first and back pages. The name ‘Ruttledge’ may have no local significance thought the name ‘Rutledge’ is important in our history, commencing with William Rutledge who purchased the Farnham Special Survey in the 1840s( Tower Hill to Dennington). The name ‘Swinton’ is prominent in our history. Mrs John Swinton (Charlotte Scott nee Dunn, 1871-1944) was married to John Swinton, the son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854. William established a store in Timor Street in the 1850s and opened branches of this store in several local towns. The Swinton family still has commercial interests in Timor Street. This book is of interest because it belonged to Charlotte Swinton, a member of the Swinton family important in Warrnambool’s commercial and community history. This is a black leather-covered book of 656 pages plus a Supplement of Hymns of 32 pages. The cover has gold lettering on the front and the spine. The pages have a gilt edging.
