Hepburn Shire Council Art and Heritage Collection
Medal, 1951 Commemorative Plaque, 1951
Medal commemorating the Centenary of Government of Victoria and the Discovery of Gold, commissioned by the Victorian Government and gifted to the Shire of Glenlyon. Designed by Andor Mészáros and minted by K.G. Luke, Melbourne, 1951. 1951 marked the centenary of Victoria's separation from the colony of New South Wales. As part of the celebrations, the Victorian Government commissioned this medal from Andor Meszaros. Drawing on his classical background, Mészáros developed the imagery for 'Equality and Justice through Freedom'. The man holding the torch represents equality; the blindfolded woman holding a sword is the symbol of justice, and both are mounted on a horse that has broken its shackles. Features on the reverse a design of a banksia and bottlebrush. There was another version of this medal which depicted a pair of gold prospectors on the reverse. This medal was presented to the Shire of Glenlyon in 1951. For over half a century, sculptors Andor (1900-1973) and Michael (1945- ) Meszaros have created medals that reflect the high points of life in Australia. From major awards and portraits of eminent Australians to artwork celebrating popular culture and the natural world, these objects illuminate our culture and history. Grounded in a centuries-old European art tradition, the medals create connections across disciplines and link such diverse subjects as scientific advances, religious themes, sport, the performing arts and motherhood. Through their public and private commissions and their personal artworks, the Meszaros sculptors have defined the modern Australian medal.Bronze medal with images and text insetObverse Description: Horse bounding left, broken shackles on foreleg, carrying woman holding sword and man holding torch; around, EQUALITY AND JUSTICE THROUGH FREEDOM Artist's name behind horse's tail: A MESZAROS Reverse Description: Stake supporting plant; above, CENTENARY OF GOVERNMENT OF VICTORIA 1851 - 1951; inscribed, Presented to / the Shire of / Glenlyon / 1951 Artist's initials to left of stakeglenlyon, hepburn shire, centenary of government, centenary of gold discovery, history of victoria, victorian governement, meszaros, kg luke, commemorative, commemorative plaque, centenary 1951 -

Sculpture, Karl Duldig, Moses by Karl Duldig 1956 (Bronze Cast 1979), 1956 / 1979
... , with the acceptance of modernism in Australia became a major theme in any ...This sculpture is a bronze cast of Karl Duldig’s 1956 terracotta sculpture titled 'Moses'. The terracotta sculpture won the 1956 Victorian Sculptor of the Year award, an honor given by the Victorian Society of Sculptors. The National Gallery of Victoria purchased the original terracotta sculpture for the Gallery’s collection in 1956. In 1979 the NGV allowed Karl to cast the original terracotta sculpture in bronze (to a limited edition of 5). The National Gallery of Victoria holds one of these casts and one is in Duldig Studio collection. The original terracotta sculpture was exhibited in 1956 at the Olympic Arts Exhibition in Wilson Hall at the University of Melbourne. Two other works by Karl were also exhibited, a sandstone titled 'Adam and Eve' and a work titled 'Fountain'. The catalogue for the Olympic exhibition, which promoted modernism across a variety of disciplines, noted that Australia’s post war immigration program had given ‘further momentum to the modernist cause’. The identification of émigré artists, such as Karl Duldig, with the acceptance of modernism in Australia became a major theme in any discussion of art and design in the post war period. Ann Carew 2016The subject Moses and the tablets of law is an important theme in the history of art. For example the National Gallery of Victoria collection includes paintings on this topic by the Australian Aboriginal artist, Queenie McKenzie (1991), prints by the Russian-French modernist artist, Marc Chagall (1956), and a painting by 19th century British academic painter, John Rogers Herbert (1870s). Michelangelo’s sculpture of Moses is perhaps the most famous sculptural interpretation of the subject. In Karl’s hands we have a modern interpretation of the theme. His simplification and abstraction of form and attention to surface modeling is masterly. The figure has an emotional intensity and despite its relatively small scale, a ‘forceful monumentality’. The sculpture is aesthetically significant for its craftsmanship, expressive qualities and modernity. It is historically significant because of its associations with the 1956 Olympic Arts Festival. The Duldig Studio’s bronze cast of the sculpture was exhibited in the exhibition '1956: Melbourne, modernity and the XVI Olympiad, Museum of Modern Art at Heide.' Apart from the formal qualities of a work like Moses, its relevance as a motif in Judaism and Christian faiths ensures its place as a work of spiritual significance. Ann Carew 2016Bronze cast from terracotta sculpture. Depicts Moses as in Exodus 32 when he returns from Sinai with the tablets of the law to find his people worshipping the golden calf, in his fury he holds the tablets aloft above his head before crashing them down on the ground. -

These interviews taken between 2010 and 2011 feature artists who went on to form the creative group known as the 69 Collective. This work was part of The Line exhibition at Collingwood Gallery in 2018. The brief given to participating artists was to present works using the theme of the horizontal line. The artworks, in a range of mediums, were hung with a consistent line travelling through each piece around the perimeter of the gallery space. The line in each work, inferred or explicit, were carefully placed together to make this cohesive whole.oral history, video, 69 smith street gallery, artist-run initiative, artist-run space, melbourne art galleries, merle parker, julian di martino, marianne little, 69 collective, jenny gibson, art, video art -

In October 1987, the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was established to find out why so many Aboriginal people were dying in prison - 99 between January 1980 and May 1989 alone. Since then, tragically, there have been another 25 deaths. The findings of the Royal Commission and its recommendations have been widely publicised since their release in May 1991. They catalogue the terrible history of dispossession and oppression of our people. The Commission makes 339 recommendations on how the past hurt and current disadvantage of the Aboriginal people can be redressed... The main themes to emerge not surprisingly, underline many of the issues raised in the Royal Commission's Final Report - the plight of families of the deceases, Aboriginal / police relations, the lack of access to land, substance abuse, appalling health, inadequate housing, and the pressing need to provide education and employment for our youth.41 p. ; 25 cm.In October 1987, the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was established to find out why so many Aboriginal people were dying in prison - 99 between January 1980 and May 1989 alone.
