Tin stencils were used to brand fruit cases to indicate the source and the destination of Harcourt Fruit for sale to local, interstate and overseas markets. These stencils are typical and also indicate grade/size of fruit. These stencils were used by J. B. Smith of Harcourt and N.C. Gaasch of Harcourt. Both of these growers customarily exported their fruit to England and Germany.An aid to marketing and branding Harcourt fruit, which had been sent in wooden cases for sale. The drawing shows all the activity and building roles involved in building a bridge in 1877. The crossing of the Murray River was very important to citizens living in both Echua, but especially those living in Moama and in further NSW regions as it provided them with access to Victorian market regions. The bridge was built privately for Deniliquin farmers, but eventually opened up to the general public.This is significant because it represents the roles of different tradesmen in the construction industry in the late 19th Century. It also shows construction stages . Bridge pylons are being inserted into the fiver banks. The photos in this album show the carefree, adventurous spirit of the young men soon to be ANZACS Many young men from the market garden, dairy, poultry and fruit farms as well local businesses enlisted c 1914 at the beginning of WWI. The older men, women and children then had to manage the farms while they worried about the dangers facing their beloved family members. Stephen Charman, aged 21 years arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's emigrants. He established purchased land in 1852 and established a market garden at Spring Grove Cheltenham with his 2nd wife Mary nee Gettens. Stephen died 1906 in Gippsland. He wrote letters to his brother Michael who had remained in England Stephen and Mary Charman were pioneer market gardeners in Moorabbin Shire 1842 and were involved in the development of Church, school and community in the area now called Cheltenham. Charman Road Cheltenham was a boundary of their land.
