Research: Stanley Morris Nye (born Ballarat in 1889, son of a Methodist minister; served AIF in WW1) moved to Surrey Hills from Auburn after 1922. He was the first occupant of 131 Union Road which was built in 1924. He is listed in the 1924,1927 and 1931 electoral rolls at 86 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. He died aged 44 years in December 1933 and Charles Leslie Mitton took over the business. Charles Leslie Mitton was practising in Newmarket prior to taking over the pharmacy in 1933, the year he also married Ethel Sylvia Stevenson. They lived at 65 Union Road until c1940 when they moved to Kenmare Street, Box Hill North. Arthur Lock was a Rat of Tobruk and served as President of the Albury Rats of Tobruk Association. 14,000 Australians were in Tobruk during the siege. On return to Australia the veterans looked to maintain the ties created amongst those who were in Tobruk during the siege and to ensure their needs were supported. In 1944, the Rats of Tobruk Association, NSW was established. This was followed by the establishment of the Victorian Branch on 2nd October 1945. Other branches and sub-branches were established across Australia and a Federal Council was established in 1946. With the passing of the survivors of Tobruk, most branches have been wound up with the exception of the Victorian branch. Since 2012 the Rats of Tobruk Association Inc. has opened up affiliate membership to descendants and relatives of the original "Rats" in order to preserve their legacy.This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region. The Department of Transport produced the Melbourne " Next Generation" G class tram badge to thank the team members involved in its design and production. Taken around 1858, depicting a row of five business buildings on a rocky, sloping hillside at New Town, with a view across to residences and open land. Businesses included, Joseph E. Bishop, Coach Builders; Straughair Duncan, Engineers, Blacksmiths & Farriers; Straughair Duncan, Beechworth Foundry; Wholesale & Retail Est. 1855, Mackenzie Family Store ; and T. Pratten, Grocer. The Mental Hospital can be seen in the background. Mark Straughair and John Duncan, established the Beechworth Foundry, Newtown in 1858 and went on to build an important industry, employing around sixteen men, after acquiring Alexander Roger's New Ford Street Foundry in the late 1860s. Making and repairing mostly mining and agricultural machinery for the Ovens District and a Beechworth brewery, the business continued to function after Straughair's death in 1882, up until the death of Duncan in 1896, when the business folded. This is a woman's kilt (skirt, shawl and pin). Two of the objects were made by the Fletcher Jones clothing company. The Tartan is the Australian tartan which was designed by John Reid, a Melbourne architect, when he entered a competition run by the Scottish Australian Heritage Council. He chose the colours of the Outback as the basis of his tartan. The tartan is design registered in Australia (No. 97439). (Source: District Tartans, P. Smith and G Teall, 1992). This outfit was possibly made around 1990. David Fletcher Jones who served in World War One had a itinerant drapery business in the Western District before opening a tailoring business in Warrnambool in 1924.He began to specialise in men's clothing and in 1946 opened a shop in Melbourne. In 1948 he opened a clothing factory in Warrnambool and formed a new company Fletcher Jones and Staff. The company expanded to all states of Australia and included the manufacture of both men's and women's clothing making it one of the best known clothing companies in Australia. The company dissolved in 2011 This is a fine example of a Fletcher Jones clothing product and comes from a firm which was a dominant industry in Warrnambool and known Australia wide.
